Hard starting issue

My 96 powerstroke normally fires on the first key cycle. Lately i go thru about 4 or 5 cycles before starting since colder weather.. It makes a lot of white smoke while cranking. I just replaced the CPS with an autozone part. I dont suspect that cause it does start eventually. I eliminated the fuel heater in the filter housing last year after winter. Could that be an issue in colder weather? Also getting engine temp light when cranking. Any advise is appreciated.

is your GPR working?
volts should drop to about 10.5 when first turned on when GPs are working.

Mine would pull in but connector was corroded.

can put a wrench on both big teminals for 20 seconds and see if it starts up after, if it does then maybe GPR is bad or corroded term.

can pull off the UVCHs on valcovers and ohm out the outer pins to group to check the GPs. should be about 1 ohm.

Sounds like your glow plugs aren't up to the task. Only buy Motorcraft sensors for your truck

Plug in for three or four hours. Report back regarding cranking ability.

My guess weak batts, janky cables, and a lame starter.

Try cycling your glow plugs for two minutes each, twice. To get those glow plugs really glowing I would not rely on the "Wait to start" light. Have u tested the resistance on your glow plugs?

cycling glow plugs does no good if they are not working.
as said, plug the block heater in for two-three hours before cold start. if it fires rite up, your glow plug system need help.
i would start with the relay. they are a known weak spot.

Isn't possible that now temps are dropping the glow plugs may need more time to heat up? In the summer compared to the winter I noticed a difference. We have a swing of 60 degrees difference between season here in california. Also, if giving the glow plugs more time to heat helps the starting issue then you are pinpointing your issue to the glow plugs. ?

I plugged it in for an hour and it started on the first cycle (45 seconds). I'm going to replace the plugs. I'm happy to know what the problem is. Thanks for the help.

If you do glow plugs only buy OEM from a trusted source like a dealer, riffraff diesel etc, there's lots of counterfeits in the web that look genuine like in Amazon or eBay.

Check armature Clarence on the injectors, they could also contribute for the hard cold start. I would send them to get rebuild if money is of no concern and perfect time to upgrade them to something peppier or shim them if you are in a budget.

before buying glow plugs, check the relay. they go bad a whole lot more often than the glow plugs do.
why spend $90 on glow plugs only to find out the relay was bad and than have to buy that too.

no need to use GP for 2 minutes unless you have some bad issues and it wont start

i wait 5 sec after WTS and it always starts in winter.
when above 50, i crank and go and it starts
below 25, needs block heater for me

I got the right valve cover off. The inner rear harness plug is a little cooked at one end. And one plug was disconnected. I checked resistance on the plugs. All read near 0.52 to 0.65. This is with neg probe on the negative battery terminal, pos probe on the end of the plug. Is that correct? I'm thinking change both inner harness and save the gaskets. Any thing wrong with reusing the gaskets?

sounds like you found your issue.
if the gasket is not ripped or melted, you should be good replacing just the harness.
