My 1997 F-250HD has been sitting for about 3 years today I dropped rear tank cleaned out replaced fuel filter cleaned filter bowl good and drained old fuel refilled with fresh fuel and thin I am ready to start but can someone explain how the glow plug relay works and what each of the 4 wires do and how to test please. I also need to know can I just cut the wires for the plug in and wire a new plug on it because my prongs for plugging it in are broke off. Thank you so much for your help
Just plug it in for three or four hours. See if lights off.
Please do not hack up any wiring. You have a constant 12V from batt on big lug. Other big lug is output to GPs. One small is switched 12V. Last is ground signal from PCM. Easy to test with even a $5 test light.
Thank You and I will check the relay in the morning and am I correct to assume the relay is open for as long as the wait to start light is on? I can’t plug it in both prongs on the 110v plug are broke can I splice in a new plug into existing cord?

i think i’ve read the glow plug relay stays on for about 2 minutes even after the light turns off
Yes on new end if cord janky. Cooper Wiring makes nice ones at local Lowes/HD. Worst case, buy new cord as I think reasonable cost.
Best way to check relay is with DVOM or test light for run time. Based on oil temp
I tested glow plug relay with test light today and was no good so will buy one in the morning and I have to replace the sprinkler head in rear tank was broke when cleaning out tank and then I will try it tomorrow. Thank you very much

Thanks I tested it today and I know the signal wire side stays hot longer than the wait to start light stays on I am going to replace tomorrow and try to make some smoke
check your fuel bowl heater fuse if you still have the oem fuel bowl. mine shorted out yesterday. i thought it was the glow plug relay cause there was no voltage to the other post, as soon as i unplugged fuel heater it had power to the relay and fired right up.

How do you unplug fuel heater just pull the fuse? Thanks
How do you unplug fuel heater just pull the fuse? Thanks
the fuse is located under the hood. it should be a big 30A. I’d shine a flashlight thru them or use a multimeter to see if it’s bad or not before pulling it. but you have to unplug the wire for the fuel bowl heater on the fuel bowl itself. it’s on the drivers side about halfway down. remember to tape it up also with electrical tape. it’s going to be a pain probably. mine actually broke off.
I had something weird happen where my fuse was still good. but my glow plug relay wouldn’t activate. as soon as i unplugged the fuel heater the glow plug relay received voltage and the truck
has been fine since.
looking from the drivers side down. this should be the fuel heater plug location (this picture looks like an aftermarket fuel bowl. but the location is the same.)
Thanks so much everyone I put in the relay and primed it all up and she made smoke. I do have question though I made be wrong as it has been several years since I have ran it but it seems like when it is starting up at first when cranking and it seems like it hits real hard at first then catches fuel and fires but the sound is like a hard knock on first crank but when she fires it purrs I don’t know please any input or maybe I am just tripping. Thanks again for all your help everything you guys have said has been on point.

Did unplugging the fuel heater and checking to make sure that the fuse is good make it run?
