Question Honest Opinions Requested

Honest opinion needed here from fellow SD owners.

In late 2016 I bought a 2017 F350 Platinum Diesel SRW to tow a boat. Well, towing a boat, parking it and dealing with the dock craziness was too much, so we ended up storing the boat at a marina that would dunk the boat when you called and then put it in an indoor locker when done. This meant that I wasn't really using the truck to much an occasional trip to to South Florida or the Keys, maybe a total of 7x. We have also sold the boat now.

Since September of 2017 I have put a total of 22,800 miles on it. I called the dealer and asked to change the diesel filter and they said, "Wait until 25k.". Anyway, since 2020 I have put about 1200 miles on it. (Back and forth to Home Depot, Lowes, Publix, that's about it). My wife and I both work from home. We have ABSOLUTELY no justification for this truck, but it is completely paid for, we know it's complete history and it has been good to us, apart from some minor things.

As a daily driver, this thing is terrible, parking it sucks, it doesn't fit in a lot of spaces. The price of diesel is ridiculous (why is more expensive than refined gasoline?!?!?!?).
As a truck, we rarely use the bed. Especially since it is so darn tall. I am 6'2" and can only reach certain areas of the bed without having to get in the bed.
The reality is that it is a 6 year old truck and the Florida weather dries stuff out (gaskets, grommets, etc). My wife has a Grand Cherokee, so we can carry most things without an issue.

My questions are:
Would you keep a 2017 F350, or would you trade it in on something else?

If I keep it:
  • How often should I change the oil? I think in the last 6 months I put 250 miles on it, but a lot of places tell you to change it regardless.
  • Should I worry about the diesel filters?
  • I cannot get an extended warranty on it and that worries me.

In June I got an INSANE offer on it, but we were leaving for vacation so we didn't have time. That offer is not even close anymore.

Any thoughts?

I appreciate it.

The market is cooling off but still good, you can still get a good price for it. With absolutely no justification to keep an expensive to operate and maintain vehicle, and being able to still get a good price for it today, I think selling it is a no brainer.

The answer is simple, if you and your wife talk about and you both decide you don't need it, get rid of it. That's a great place to be in life with both of you talking and agreeing.

You wouldn't have posted the question if at least part of you didn't want to keep it.

I went through this with my other truck. I dearly loved it. I had done all the work to it and made it mine. It was long since paid for and owed me nothing. It had been a great rig. Life circumstances came along and it was time to part with it, and I knew it was time, but I couldn't let it go. I argued with myself over and over and even though all the common sense in the world told me it was time to sell it, I couldn't...

Finally I had talked myself in enough loops to just suck it up and put a for sale sign on it. That was the hardest part. The finality of the decision made.

Common sense is telling you the correct answer for your situation... But as we all know, that's only part of the equation.

As for the maintenance... I don't have much on that. My dealer told me 5000 miles or one year on the oil changes. We make it a point to take the rig out for a good drive at least once every couple weeks. They're not meant to sit. That said, after our 3 hour cruise on Sunday, or truck has 4,442 miles on it after one full year of ownership.

I agree, talk with your wife and figure out if it's worth keeping it. But I would also take into consideration that getting trucks now days are not as easy as they were back in 2017, and likely won't be for a long time to come. Also, they are significantly more expensive now than what they were back in 2017... So, consider if "needing a truck" anytime is in your future...

As far as the "diesel filter"... do you mean oil filter? I so, I hope that I has been changed before and this isn't the first time... As for the interval, many folks have different time frames. But if you are not driving it much at all, I'd say at least once a year is a very good idea. And don't forget the fuel filters too... those are very important to remember to change!

great truck but if you don't use it, or have a pretty good inclination that you will use it more in the future, then sell it and move on.....

2 cents,
Dave

Even though your offer is quite a bit less than it was months ago, its only going down from here too so every day you wait to sell the less its worth. That's an awful nice and expensive truck to have to put 1k miles per year on, not to mention diesels like to be driven and pull a load. I'd sell it if I were in your shoes.

Sell it if you need the cash more than the truck, keep it if that isn't an issue, it's paid for so not really costing you much.

Why can't you get an extended warranty on it??? There are a zillion auto warranty companies out there.
Probably just as well off making a repair savings account for it though since you drive it so little.

Oil changes once a year since it is driven so little.
Fuel filter changes by the owners manual mileage recommendation.

If paid for, and if you think you will ever want a truck later on...then keep it. Not only are trucks harder find and getting more expensive, but even the Ford CEO himself wants to do away with ICE trucks. He even stated he is simply using the Ford truck division to fund the EV side of Ford until the EV side is up and running...then he is chopping the ICE truck division. Food for thought. Nice looking truck btw.

Not worth hanging on to it if you don't use it, Especially if it is parked outside day after day. Check prices around your area for your truck or as close to it, and put it up for sale. Money in the bank for other things is always better than a depreciating asset sitting in the sun.

Being a diesel, the emissions stuff does not like not being worked, so I'd get rid of it before you have issues with that. I like having a truck to tote stuff, so I'd get a F-150 eco boost as my daily. I work from home and only drive about 10-15k miles a year.

I'd have a hard time getting rid of it; it's paid off, it's about the best of it's type, and it's basically new. Anything you replace it with will need be paid for, and is going to cost more than it ought to.

On the other hand you could get good money for that truck.

Tough choice.

You make a good point; emotional attachment to vehicles clouds my judgment for sure.

I have no emotional attachment to material objects. If it doesn’t serve a purpose it’s gone.
