Dana 60 questions

Hi all, got a 97 f350 cclb powerstroke. And I started pulling apart my hub/Axel/spindel assembly to get to my ball joints to replace. I have been experiencing grinding noises while turning especially at low speeds. But when taking apart my hub assembly I noticed no snap ring. Also both my axels have as little back and fourth play. Is that normal? I would imagine the snap rings would keep the movement from happening but my Axel has no groove in it for a snap ring to seat. Please respond, thanks.

no snap ring on my axle shaft when I took it apart

if ball joints are really bad, then unjoint cant turn correctly and maybe you source of noise

The noise occurs when in 2wd so I wouldn't think the Axel is the issue?. I put new ball joints in on the left side where I think the noise is coming from. I also replaced all tie rod ends and steering linkage all the way to the pitman arm. I test drove it yesterday and still can hear the noise. Either the bearings are making the noise or it's the right side which I haven't done yet. Sometimes noises can be hard to track where they come from? When I disassembled the hub/bearing components everything looked ok and freely spun easily. It's possible that when I pull apart the right wheel I might be able to notice difference between the 2 sides. The noise occurs only when turning left and sounds like it comes from the driver side. I chose to replace these parts because they had obvious wear to them.

I pulled the left Axel shaft and the u joints were not seized or had any play in them when holding both ends. I debated on getting the u joints replaced at 100 each Axel shaft considering I had everything pulled apart but I elected to save the money.

I replaced the ball joints, and all steering parts to the drop pitman arm. I then took it to get aligned. The guy at the alignment shop stated it could be the tires rubbing when turning left. But my tires are 33's on a one ton truck and I doubt just by looking at my wheels while they are turning that this is happening. I also see no wear markings. Could it be the steering box? Could the steering box be getting jammed up only when turning left?

When it's doing this can you feel the noise in the steering wheel ?
Did it just start doing this one day or was some work done on it then it started ?

Don't feel it in the steering wheel. Going faster speeds turning there is not noise. It's only during sharp turns. But then again, who makes sharp turns going freeway speeds. It's been occurring since I bought the truck a year and a half two years ago. I pulled the front axle and bearings apart on both Wheels replacing the ball joints. I inspected the u-joints on the front axles on both Wheels and they weren't seized or they didn't even have excessive play so I left them as is. Then I replaced the tie rods all the way up to the pitman arm. I can't imagine the issue being the u-joints because these noises don't occur while driving just four wheel. The only thing I can think of is the steering box. Tires rubbing would be an obvious and noticeable sign. Could the leaf springs be making this noise but I doubt it? The noise sounds like coming from the left side while only turning left

Could it be bearings? I didn't replace the inner or outer bearings but if it were bearings I'd be hearing the noise regardless of turning.

I don't think so. I can verify that. But when I start turning the wheel the noise begins at a certain point while increasing the turn. And when I say increase meaning the more I turn the wheel. In other words, the noise begins at a certain turn radius and continue as I turn further. That's likely why I don't hear it at larger speeds because the turn radius is not enough to engage that noise. I hear it at stop light turns around my neighbor when turning down the street and such. But not in the highway.

If the brakes don't stop it my next step would be putting it up on jack stands, start it up and turn the wheels in the direction it makes the noise and go from there.
