I have the 2002 F-250 5.4L 2V CCLB 4WD with 226,000 miles on the clock. I have never changed out the power steering fluid (I'm sorry) to the best of my recollection. So I need to do it now and need to know the process. Can anyone give a detailed method to change it out? Eventually, I'd like to change the Power Steering Box out but not at the moment. Your insight is much appreciated.
Thanks,
PJ
When I do it I use a turkey baster to suck out the old fluid, then refill with new fluid, you can do it a couple of times if you'd like to get as much of the old fluid as possible if you'd like.
If you take the return line off that comes from the brake booster deal to the p s res & put it in a jug. Jack up the front end & get someone to turn the wheel & pump the brakes with engine running while you keep adding fluid. You will get all the fluid changed & it doesn't take very long to do it. Put something over the nipple where you take the return line off the res. I believe I used about 2 qts when I did mine.
Oh shucks just seen you have a gas job so you may not have the hyda-boost brake deal. IDK
On the gas motors, there isn't the powerboost system, so here's all you need to do to swap out all the fluid in a few minutes. It takes longer getting everything setup...
1) Suck out as much fluid from the reservoir with turkey baster or a siphon.
2) Remove the return line from the reservoir (The line that is attached to the cooler and runs to the reservoir, or the smaller diameter one (3/8" ID))
3) Plug the reservoir, I usually just use a longer piece of fuel or PS line and route it up high. This is so fluid doesn't drip out of the reservoir during the next few steps.
4) Use a barb fitting and connect your return line to another longer piece of line that routes down to your collection container (milk jug, bucket, etc.)
5) Jack up front end so tires are off ground
6) Fill up reservoir as high as you can with the new fluid
7) Without turning the engine on, turn key so the steering wheel isn't locked up and turn the wheel side to side (doesn't need to go to full lock) to cycle the fluid. Turn the wheel back and forth about 4x and check the reservoir and top it off with the new fluid each time. You'll probably only need to do this about 5 times total to get all the old fluid out.
I simply jack up the front end so the tires can turn.
Turkey baster the old out, new in, turn the wheels 5-6 times repeat old fluid out new in.
Do this a couple times and you've basically sucked all the old out and didn't have to crack any lines to do it.

Yeap, you can do do that too, but the new fluid you put into the reservoir is instantly mixed with the old fluid coming up out of the return line. I think it just takes a little longer to get all the old stuff out.
Also, I just did this with Royal Purple Max EZ and the stuff is expensive so I didn't want to buy extra... haha.

Haha thats funny and yes its expensive.
Above me so yes I probably take longer but its easier.
