My 2000 E350 began moaning intermittantly while it was still under warranty. The dealer had looked at it and of course it wasn't making the noise that day. Now it moans whenever I'm turning. I've been lead to believe that it is in the rack not the pump. Is this true? Is there any new power steering in a bottle that works?
I have A 02 F150 5.4 and my power steering whined and moaned every timed I turned it. I put in about 2 1/2 bottles of lusca power steering fluid and the nosies are gone!!! (It comes in a white bottles I think 8oz, about 8 bucks a bottle, got it at auto zone.
Many here have gotten good results from switching to a synthetic power steering fluid.
It could just be the fluid is dead. Of course, it could be lots of other things...
However, a "moan" is usually not the steering box, unless it's binding and you'd certainly have other handling issues It could be working too hard because the ball-joints are shot, or you have really big tires on it (or they are aired way down).
on this note, i am also looking to change out my steering fluid soon. what is the best way to flush out the lines to ensure a complete change out? thanks !!!
