I am not really sure myself either on power steering replacement. This pickup is probably the first vehicle I have owned in quite some time that did not have self changing power steering fluid! Seems like something like 50K is what is recommended.
Something has gone very neglected in my truck, the power steering fluid. How do you change yours and how often?
Our trucks use ATF in the power steering system, not power steering fluid like you would normally find. Flushing it is quite easy and a good video on the subject is linked below.
^^^^^^^^^ Repeat.... Repeat..... from above.....Very Easy to do...... ^^^^^ Repeat... Repeat ONLY USE ATF Fluid....
True story: years ago my wife took our truck on a shopping weekend with her two sisters. The power steering pump started whining a little bit and the wife knew if 'something' happened to my baby that I would be upset. She called and told me what was going on and I said that there was a qt of ATF fluid behind the back seat. My wife thought I was pulling her leg and trying to get her to do something stupid, when I told her ATF Fluid. One of her sisters piped up and I could hear her say..."It is ok, I saw my husband do the same thing with our truck and it is fine"... . (Her husband is a Diesel Mechanic and their truck she was talking about was a 2000 7.3)
