My 1976 Highboy project is coming along but when it's full of fuel my gauge reads 3/4. The tank, sending unit and gauge are all new. As I understand the only way to fix this is by bending the float rod on the sender? When I remove the wire from sending unit and ground it my gauge reads full. Luckily for me the tank is behind the seat so at least I have easy access to the sending unit. I have removed and cleaned all my grounds on the truck so I guess that isn't the issue. Any insight would be much appreciated.
Where dose the gauge read with say 5 gallons in the tank?
My 2 tanks the needle comes up to the line for E.
I would rather have it read empty like mine with some still in the tank than rear 1/4 tank and run out of gas but that's me

BTW mine read just over the full line when full.
Hey fuzz - side note question; if I understand what you wrote above correctly - when the fuel gauge is at E, it is indication of 5 gallons left? Kinda like reserve function?
They are all set up that way from the factory. At least similar anyway... Not specifically with five gallons, just with some left.
No one particular number of gallons that I was ever aware of, but always some left with the needle on E.
Probably the easiest way to tell is to get it to empty then run it to "empty" where it runs out of gas. Can be a bit awkward though if you don't have some extra handy!
But you can adjust both full and empty on most of these senders. I did that on my '71 and got it to read just over the line when full and just under the line when empty. Worked great for me.
Oh, and that was with the original senders (two tanks) with just 5 years and 60k miles on the clock. Seems a high percentage of them seem to have read that way from what I gather on the forums.
You could drain it and see where the needle goes. Then slowly re-fill until you see when the needle starts to read.

Yes
When on E I know I still have 5 gallons left in the tanks.
I had a truck that ran out of gas at 1/4 tank and always on the way to the station so i did not want that on my truck.
I may run 1 tank down to E and the other to 1/8 tank before filling up again.
