I have a 1973 F600 truck and am at a loss because i dont have a title for it. Does anyone know how to get a title for a older truck? I live in Missouri and the DMV says if you dont have a title you cant register it or get a title or plates.
Is the title in your name? If so, see what's needed to apply for a lost title replacement.
If the title is in someone else's name contact the DMV to see what you need to do to get ownership of an abandoned vehicle.
When I lived in Florida I had a car that was abandoned and contacted the DMV. They told me to find out who's name the car was titled in and send them a certified, return receipt requested letter asking for the title.
Fortunately I had a buddy who is a cop and he ran the VIN and got the last owners name and address. If the letter is returned you can take it to the DMV and apply for a title in your name. If the letter wasn't returned, you take the return receipt as proof they got the letter to the DMV and you can then apply for a title.
This was 30+ years ago so things may have changed.
I bought the truck years ago for parts but never used any parts so now i am redoing the truck have spent a bunch of time and money went to title it but guess things have changed a bunch the missouri license bureau said they couldnt help me i needed a title before i could register it in my name. I couldnt find the person i bought it from and if i remember right he bought it from someone that didnt have a title anyway. Their used to be a way to get a abandon title but they tell me not any more. I know their used to be places to get titles for older vehicles this is almost 50 years old so their must be a way to get one.
Do you deal with any older garages in your area?
How bout towing co.?
Check with them as they must get cars left for repair and it was to much money or picked up on the road.
I dont think they can just scrap them as they also have to follow some rule other wise they would be scrapping everything left or picked up.
I would also try the DMV again as you may have gotten someone that just did not want to deal with the issue right then.

X2 call the Missouri highway patrol to get the 100% facts (and ask for the document name, page and paragraph) and the name of the person you are talking to, before you do something "sketchy" and it comes back to bite you. Also this might be a hard lesson to learn to try and title if AFTER you put the time and $ in to fixing it up.
How do you get a title for a car with a bill of sale in Missouri?
Once the vehicle has been inspected, you must mail the completed Form 551, original bill of sale, and a completed title application to the Missouri Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Bureau, P.O. Box 2076, Jefferson City, MO 65105.
How do I find out who owns a vehicle in Missouri?
Pleasecontact the Department of Revenue at 573-526-3669, Option 3, for further information regarding obtaining motor vehicle records.
The last resort is either continuing to deal with it as a parts truck or obtain another of the key part where the official, authoritative VIN is stamped. That should be the frame. It doesn't even have to be a '73. The fifth generation of F 600s ran from 1967-1979 according to Wikipedia. So that last ditch solution is to buy another '67-'79 F-600, one that has a decent, usable frame and get a signed-over-to-you title or a Bill of Sale. In the Bill of Sale case, get the DMV to tell you that the seller's name is the same as the last known registered owner prior to payment. Nowadays, they (and most LEOs) are prohibited from telling you the name of the last owner but they can tell you if the name you supply matches it and will work in getting a title based on the Bill of Sale. They all consult the same national electronic database but the procedure for obtaining a title from the Bill of Sale will vary by state.
In AR you can file for one with a bill of sale and you have to fill out a form stating how you acquired the vehicle basically, and have the state police inspect the VIN. I’m sure it’s not much different there
Most states have a way to get a title for something, either through VIN/registration searches if it was previously registered in the state or they can assign a state issued VIN once it's been inspected by some type of safety/law enforcement agency. Some states are much, much easier than others. I've been trying to find out what I need to do to frame swap my truck for almost a year now. We have a title dept. that handles this stuff and they apparently don't like answering phones or returning calls The customer service and counter people at the actual DMV have no clue about any of it.
There are a few different state where you can go through a service to get a title, usually states that only need a bill of sale for older vehicles. I went through one about 15 years ago to get a title for my Supercab. I bought it out of a scrap yard just for parts also, but it was way too nice, for around here, to part out. I think it cost me about $200 at the time? I had to sell them my truck for $1, and send them a handwritten bill of sale. They ran a VIN check to make sure it isn't stolen, then they title it in their name. Then they sell it back to you for $1, with a clean title.
There is still a lot of unanswered questions about this story but the lesson for us is that it can happen that someone will pop up with an ownership claim after you've invested heavily in a project. Will you be able to fend them off?
Google "stolen van Cherry" and you'll find other renditions of this tale, pictures etc.
Get on the internet and look up the Vermont Title Loophole. It is a pretty straight forward process, but you will need to have or find a bill of sale..... Just hope it does not kick back stolen and learn your lesson on this one.
I was going to do it for an older Ramcharger, but all the fees and transfers back to PA racked it up to about a $1,000 and the seller was too sketchy to trust.
Good luck and keep us updated on how the process goes.
