I just purchased a 1949 Ford F1. It was love at first sight. She needs work and an engine but is in decent shape.
The down fall is there is no title. The Owner before the one i purchased the truck off is dead, He got the truck when he was 19 in texas. (was around 60 when he died). The person i purchased the truck off was his brother who knows nothing about cars. The truck has Texas Farm Truck Plates on it and they are stamped with 49. I cant find any info with the vin number or plates and the Florida DMV told me (after i told them it had texas plates) that i would have to go to texas to get a title. Ive seen a few company that say they will get you a title but the truck has to be up and running for me to do so. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how i could get a title or even find some information on the truck. It will be a while before the truck is on the road, but when its done i want to drive it lol. Or at least be educated on what i need to do to get it on the road.
well each state is different with there title laws. your best bet would be to find somebody at your local dmv that is willing to get off their butt and actually help (might be difficult). It sounds like it hasn't been licensed in a long time which might make it harder or easier to get a title depending on the local rules. my advice is to make a friend in the dmv so they can help you sort this out, you might have to file for a lost title or get a state assigned vin or something.
There are a couple companies on the internet that specialize in getting titles for older vehicles. (don't remember the names) Another thing to do is get on your states DMV website and do a search for obtaining a lost title.
All states are different but in my state you need a bill of sale, a registered letter sent to the address of the last known owner, and an ad placed in a local paper, etc. It's a bit more complicated than that but that is the basics. If you meet all of the requirements and wait the prescribed time they give you a title.
I would think most states would be similar. The best advice I can possibly give is to know the laws in your state. Most DMV workers I have come in contact with don't know and don't care about getting a title for some forgotten piece of old iron. If you know the forms you need it makes the process much easier for them and you. Good luck.....
i know a few things.... in my state (tn.) you need a notarized bill of sale and a vin# and you can get a title. i found my vin# on the passenger side of the crossmember under the rad support. If you have a buddy that lives in alabama its real easy you sell it to him real cheap he takes it in with the vin# and the weight and boom he gets a title than sells it back to you real cheap and you take the title in and get it transferred to your name, never done it but here its easy if you know someone in alabama.
I don't think that's exactly the way it works in Alabama, Jed. I've bought cars out of AL and I'm somewhat familiar with their system. They do not issue or require titles for vehicles produced before 1975. All buying and selling of vehicles built prior to then is done via bill of sale. That makes it really convenient if your an AL resident, but it's not much help otherwise. It IS beneficial, however, if you can get an AL buddy to get you a notarized bill of sale that states that he sold the vehicle in question to you. Other states are aware of the fact that AL and a few other states don't title old stuff and they are normally willing to issue you a title with just the AL bill of sale and a police inspection.
