I know there are other threads with this issue but I'm not sure all the "Clunking" noises people are describing are the same. I took a video today of the clunking my truck was making and found it to be the slip yoke. It clunks when stopping and when accelerating from the stop. It may be doing this while driving as well but i don't notice it. Any mechanics have a fix for this? Is this a simple take apart and grease job or am i looking at a more serious issue?
Greasing it won't do a thing other than make a mess, (it is designed to get all the lube it needs from the atf, if your referring to the slip shaft ). I would check for severe axle wrap, caused by a loose axle u-bolt, missing leaf spring, motor/trans. mounts, etc. Looks very severe in my opinion.
Update to my previous post and video: Packed the splines of the slip joint with grease and fixed the issue.
How did you grease the slip joint? Can you just remove the driveshaft, then pull the yoke out? Will trans fluid come pouring out? My truck is definitely clunking like yours.
I was experiencing the same clunking issue. The output shaft seal also starting leaking, so I went to Ford and bought the seal. Greasing the splines and replacing that seal were super easy and it fixed my clunking issue! I just used some high moly engine assembly grease I had on the shelf. The splines looked good and had ATF in them - not good enough apparently.
