Apparently there are two versions of starters for the 302 - a long one and a short one. At least the info that came with my block hugger headers state to make sure and use the 'short' starter.
Does anyone know which applications used the 'short' version??
I've only heard of a regular sized one and a mini starter. That is probably what they mean. I know the newer fox body Mustangs came with them, 92-93 even maybe 91.
I was having header clearance problems with the stock starter on my 55 F-100, with the small block 302 engine using Sanderson Headers. I went with a Hi-Torque, Mini Starter from Ford Racing part # M-11000-A50. The starter is smaller in diameter, weighs about 5 lbs less, and will give you plenty of header clearance.
I had to put a shorter starter in my '59 F-100 when I put the Dakota IFS and block hugger headers. I am using a Napa "Power Supreme" #44-9240. It fits and clears the headers.
