hello i am new to the forum and after searching around a bit i had a question on piston rings that i cant seem to find an answer to. when buying .020" oversize rings are the .020 over the bore size in diameter or are the .020 wider then stock. Just picked up a 71 F100 and it was smoking quite a bit so i am looking in to rebuilding the motor. motor is a 390 and the pistons are stamped .020 on the top.
An .020 piston ring goes on an .020 larger piston in an .020 larger bore. You would have to Check the piston Bores for Diameter and "out of roundness" and check the measurements of each bore.
If you want to gambol you could pop in a new set of .020 Rings because the rind do wear and it might buy some time. But if the Bores are out of round and Too Warn you would have to re-bore and re-oversize.
If the "smoke" is blue it is oil but if it is white it is water.

Ok so it is not wider at all its the diameter that changes. thanks. i have heard of people running . 020 over on a stock size piston. thanks for the reply.
Thanks. i will check them out. I will probably do a complete rebuild while i have already started taking it apart. timing chain had about an inch of play in it. i am surprised it even ran as good as it did.
