Regular Mercon or Mercon

I know that the transmission needs Mercon SP but how about the transfer case and power steering? Do they need Mercon SP to or just Mercon. I have extra Mercon SP but want to make sure it is right

Mercon was stated in the manual for both. Let the games begin.

I've used Mobil 1 ATF for both.

I recently used the Mobil 1 version and my t/case has not grenaded (yet)

Got a free case of the Mercon for my recent trans service, that my fleet buddy had in his truck for years and never used it.....scored on that one. Yet he got a huge box of fireworks.

Mercon V (replacement for the old Mercon) for the power steering.

Mercon SP or LV for the transmission.

Edit after being corrected: Transfer case takes Ford Transfer Case Fluid or it looks like Mercon LV work as well. NOT Mercon V.

I know I read it somewhere, probably here, NOT to use Mercon V in our transfer cases - I had changed the fluid in our Expedition to Mercon V and the warning extended to its transfer case as well, so I changed out the fluid again. Ford sells a transfer case fluid btw...

I've followed others and have Mobil 1 ATF for the next transfer case change...

Do NOT use Mercon V in the transfer case.

Ford now recommends Mercon LV in all Transfer Cases.

Jack I am curious why are some systems dependent on specific oils? Is it the compatibility with the seals, the lubricity of that particular fluid etc?

I can see trannies and friction disc makeup, clutches etc but P/S systems as well?

thanks

I think a combination of all that. With the PS system, you can generate some high pressures, especially at bump stop. And it really needs an anti-aeration package. More of a true hydraulic system and it can get pretty hot. We used to do test trials of brake materials in taxi fleets (NYC). Years ago, those guys were like race drivers, cutting in and out, braking, no real cooling air flow block to block. The fleet we used to work with (when they used Crown Vics) used to put in larger trans and PS coolers.

While my thing was tribology, it was the opposite of lubrication.

Crap, I forgot about that. It's been a few years since I last changed the Transfer case fluid. I'll edit my post above so nobody goes down the wrong rabbit hole.
