Just a reminder to all the off roaders, a tragic attempted recovery accident here in Arizona that didn't have to happen, mistakes were made. Be safe out there. https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a4...very-accident/
People do not understand how much energy is transfered between vehicles. I broke a strap and sent it through my buddies back window sending him to the hospital.
Any sort of cable arrest device on the strap or just putting the hood up would have saved that guys life.
Also, the hitch pin is much better attach point than the drop hitch.
I no longer 'yank' with vehicles, and usually have a winch for help if I know I'm going off road.
We all make mistakes and we all have to learn somehow, I just hope no one else has pay the same price for their education as that poor guy (and his family) did.
I hate those hollow square tubing hitches they are utter garbage IMO, nothing like a good quality solid hitch. So sorry to hear that man lost his life.
That is a shame. I have seen shows where they resort to the jerking method when just pulling fails but I wouldn't do it. Parts get yanked off of equipment and injury and death can occur, as demonstrated there. I'd get another vehicle and make a train but never jerk on it.
I just had to recover a vehicle today (one of my own). Thank you for sharing the article. It was a timely reminder.
Some 40 odd years ago, I had collection of drop hitches, all hollow, all different lever lengths aka drop depths (2", 4", 6", 8", 10") for my 1979, as I did run a little bit lifted for a while back then, when Big Foot was still a new thing.
That tragedy could easily have been me back then.
Nowadays, all of my ballmounts are solid shanks, and when pulling another vehicle, I use a solid forged eyelet loop on the recovered vehicle, and solid forged hook on the recovery vehicle. I drape a heavy blanket in the middle of the tow strap too.
