Question Transmission Swap

I am looking into buying a 1991 F-150. The guy says that the transmission that is in it is out and that he has a new C6 trans to go into it. I though that this truck would have a E40D in it.

It is 2wd drive and looks to be in decent shape. It also has the 300 I6 in it.

If I buy it what will I have to do to swap to the C6 (or can it be done) or should I look for a E40D?

You can swap ANY transmission into ANY truck if you have enough time and money.

In 1991 the C6 was still very common. It may have a C6. If it has an E4OD or AOD, then it is going to take a lot more work to get the C6 in it. Maybe you should take a look underneath and see what's really in it.

Depends how was ordered for trans for the auto, I have seen Bricknose 4.9s with C6 and E4OD.

If has a C6 I would pop an AOD in the thing and rock a 3.55:1 rear axle. Better econ and more pep. There are three shift governors for the AOD, I think Panthers had lowest. There are also multiple tailshaft lengths.

No such thing as an e forty d. That’s an oh as in overdrive.

Do you have access to the sticker on the B pillar? That will tell you what transmission was originally in the truck when built. Is there an overdrive cancel switch on the dashboard to the right of the steering column? It could have had a C6, e4od or maybe even an aod in ‘91. How important is overdrive to you? I’m fairly certain that you would also need a longer driveshaft For t he C6.

I am trying to keep the cost down. So I would like to go back with what came in it but since it comes with a C6 I was going to go that route. If I have to change the drive shaft, computer, or any other things then I just need to stay with what is in it.

My son and I are look for a project truck but I need it to run and drive and work on in between.

I would hold out for an E4OD truck. 3 speed transmissions are archaic. 4 speed with a lock up torque converter are worth their weight in gold when it comes to economy and drivability. Nobody wants to listen to the big block screaming a 3000 rpm at 65mph on the highway.

If it was factory equipped with an E4OD, my vote is to put another E4OD in it. By the time you shoehorn the wrong trans in, it'll cost ya more than a used E4OD. Why spend extra money to modify the truck so it can have a worse transmission?

If it was originally equipped w/ C6 then I could go either way. For a plow truck or a yard truck they're great, for the highway not so much.

Off topic, but every man on Earth has the story of the car/truck he wishes he never sold. Mine was a 92 F-150 with an E4OD. That thing drove and shifted as good as anything from 2022. It's still alive, might have to buy it back some day.
