I'm in the process of replacing the 3-speed manual in my 75 (300 6 cyl), with a C4, and I've read a fair bit of stuff on this topic, so I may be able to help. But, I'm not certain what your question is. What is your problem or what is it you want to do?
is it possible or am i dreaming cant loose the 3 on the tree / 300 I6 / C2 trans as the plate says
No such thing as TRANS code C2, it's just C / The 2 is the first digit of the AXLE code that follows the TRANS code on the Warranty Plate.
C = Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission.
Steering column with an A/T is different than with 3 M/T. Shift tube, shift collar different, as is the mast jacket.
Bottom of the steering column has selector levers. A/T has one, 3 M/T has two.
1978 was the first year that the 300 & 302 were available w/a C6, but the C4 was also available. NSS mounts on the transmission, C6 uses a different NSS than C4.
1967/77: NSS mounts on the steering column, same for all A/T's.
The most common C series tranny that will bolt to your 300 engine is a C4. Even then, you have to be sure the tranny has the right bell housing as it may have a big bell or small small bell. You'd need the small bell. As for the C6, I understand they are out there with a small bell, but they are rare. Bill is usually right about these things, and he says they only started making a C6 that would bolt to the 300 in '78. I guess if you can find one, well done. If not, you may want to consider a C4.
I don't understand what you mean by asking "if I can keep my 3 on the tree". Do you mean can you keep the gearshift? I don't know. I never tried. I just swapped in the automatic column shift when I changed the transmission. If you don't have access to one of those, you might consider installing a floor shift. There are kits, and I've seen fabricated ones that do the job too.
And just so you know, if you are doing this swap, you will also need to replace your current flexplate with the right flywheel for the automatic tranny, and that flywheel will also have to be specific to your engine because of balancing specs. You'll also need to swap the starter. And you'll need a radiator with a tranny cooler as well as the cooling lines. And you'll need a set up for the accelorator-tranny kickdown. I'm not trying to discourage you, just speaking from experience that there's a lot of things in addition to the gearshift to think about.
