So I have a 1972 f250 4x4 and right now it has a 74'-75' Dana 60 drum brake front axle on it right now. I'm looking at a Dana 60 kingpin disc brake front axle from a 87'-91' f350. I was wondering if it would work as a swap and what all would be involved in doing so. I'm really just trying to upgrade the brakes to disc and get away from the closed knuckles. Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated as this 4x4 stuff is all new to me. Thanks in advance.
Do you really need a D60 for 4wheeling hard duty, or is it going to be used a boulevard cruiser? You can find 76 D44 low pinion and 76 D60 low pinion axles, or 77-79 D44/60 high pinion axles as your best choice and almost bolt in. The post 86-98 F-350's have wider frames so you would have to mount the leaf springs outboard of the frame which means you would have to weld up new mounts. Or if you are a fabricator, you can use Battle Born Brakes 2005+ SD kit for a D50/60 straight axle.
Your absolutely correct that I don't need a d60 like that. It's going to be a daily driver and some off-road on the wkends. I'm just having an extremely hard time finding anything locally and I stumbled across this one by chance and it's not a bad price as far as I know. This is my first 4x4 and I've been all over this site and others trying to learn what I can ( and thank God for this site and others). I'd be happy as a bug in a rug with a d44 lp. I'm just looking to upgrade to disc brakes just to be able to drive through the traffic down here. Just like I'm going to install three point safety belts, the brakes are a safety feature for my daughter who will be catching a ride wherever.
I don't think you will find a disc conversion for a closed knuckle 60. One would be fabricated with enough time and resources.
That said it sounds like a 8 lug disc 44 is your best option. Good luck.
Sorry to chime in with an item for sale, but I have a HP dana44 78-79 disc brake 4.10 rebuilt a few years ago. Reason for selling is a d60 3.54 took its place. I have an ad in the classifieds, I’m between Montana and Texas but a little east, in Nebraska.
I'm from Iowa but I have family in Nebraska. To far for me to travel for an axle and to far to ask anyone to bring it down. Otherwise I'd take you up on that. I'm in the Dallas area and there just doesn't seem to be much in parts around here. Not much interest in buying the horde that I'm trying to get rid of myself. Thank you though. I'm starting to think I'm going to go ahead and rebuild the d60 closed knuckles and just deal with the drum brakes for now.
You will get better turning radius with open knuckle. Have you looked for 78-79 D44? Might be easier to find. Swap right in and then you have “modern” front end with discs.
