could someone please tell me what it takes to swap my HP D44 to a HP D60. what im most curious about is the steering step up. what parts will i need? will i be able to set up a sway bar? any info is a great help!!! thanks
i did the swap on my truck, it's very easy if you get a 78-79 d60. just a bolt in deal. everything from the old axle will bolt up as 77 said. just thought id kick my .02 of experience in. the only thing you might need to change from your truck is the brake setup from drum to disc depending on what you have.
73-79 Models = Direct Bolt on. 76-79 = Disk / Open Knuckle. 73-75 = Drum Brake Closed Knuckle.
Be sure to use the spring hanger clamps from the D-60. The D-44's will work but not as good, they fit differently.
80-up - Spring width differences. Major fabbing but very possible to do.
78 was first year of larger inner 35 spline axles. 77 1/2 down uses axles equivalent to D-44 axles.
Use the button on top right called "Search". Alot of great info on this topic.
the d60 was not available with drum brakes. 76 was the first year that the d60 was offered. so it has disc brakes, but if you get a 76 or 77, it will be a low pinion axle 78 and 79 are high pinion. and the 76-77 d60 had the same axle-shafts as the 78-79, the only difference was that 76-77 was low pinion. the 73-75 had a d44 and a d44 hd, the d44 hd was the axle that used the same axleshafts.
