Good evening all,
I have a 02 4WD Excursion that I just bought. It supposedly had a rebuilt motor, and new transmission in the last year.
The last two weeks it’s felt like the brakes were sticking coming from a stop sign. Checked the brakes all good. This morning I left the house, and it felt like it didn’t have any power, and barely crawled. I ended up having to drive it in reverse to get it back home.
Fluid level was fine, a little dirty but not terrible.
I’ve been reading some of the forums stating it could be the 3 bolts inside the transmission, also the steering torx bolts. I’m new to working on this truck.
anything else I should be looking at?
The guy I bought it from is MIA, so I don’t know if the tranny is under warranty or not.
Any help or input would be appreciated. I love this truck, but I’d love her even more if she was running. Lol
It could be loose feedbolts. You can access them by dropping the pan and the main valve body.
If you can select park and reverse it isn't likely to be loose bolts at the end of the steering column. But it's a good idea to check them. Get a #30 Torx driver and crawl under the dash. Look up the steering column and there they are.
Thanks for the input Mark. I appreciate it. I did tighten the steering column bolts. Both were almost completely out. Made the shifting stiffer, but still won’t move.
Tomorrow I’m going to drop the pan, and do what you suggested with the three bolts.
I’ve never did anything like this before, so I hope I’m not taking on more than I should. Only way to learn though.
If you're going to drop the pan, and you said the trans was new. If I were dropping the pan, I'd go ahead and replace the filter, and the fluid depending on how it looks.
I figured I might as well replace the ATF, and the filter while I’m in there. Save me doing it again later. I just hope all of this fixes it. Thanks Shelby for your advice. It’s appreciated.
Is there anything I should watch out for when I drop the main valve body? I really can’t afford to mess this up. Like I stated, this is my first time doing this sort of thing.
