I hope i am posting this in the right forum?? What my problem is, is once in while when i go to put my truck into drive it does not what to move it is like the brakes are on but there are not and i have to through it into reverse, back up a couple feet and then put it into drive. Wierd eh!! Of course everytime i take it into the garage the truck runs fine. I guess my point is has anyone had this problem or any ideas what the problem is or what might cause it. Thanks in advance.
Does it only move when you put it in reverse first? Have you tried putting it in drive the revving the engine till it moves? If you can do the second thing you may need a tranny rebuild or just take it to a trans shop you can trust for a checkout.
Strange things happen to 4x4's after you go-a-muddin' Have you been in deep, thick mud? Check the linkage for packed mud or sticks, grass, pine cones.....seen it all. Give her a quick look underneath.
I know what you are talking about and it's been pissing me off for awhile now. You start it up, shift into drive, release parking brake, and the truck doesn't move. The idle is too weak to move the truck. If I rev it up the truck will move, then continue to have that "drag", every couple feet (or every rotation, of what I don't know) until I get out of parking lot speeds. I have never had it happen in reverse, and this makes me think it's a tranny thing. I have noticed something interesting about it though. As the engine warms up, say after 5 or 10 miles, it doesn't happen. If I pull over when the fluid is hot, shut down, then start up again, the truck will idle forward in a smooth fashion like it should. The problem seems to happen when I just get in after the truck has sat overnight or a couple hours. I think it could be the tranny fluid warming up and flowing better, maybe a possible clog in the filter, or crap in the fluid, I dunno. If anyone has every solved this? I'm going to change the fluid and hope that does it, 'cause I don't know how long it's been since the last owner changed it. I fear it could be something worse. But overall my truck is running good, and I don't want to go on an easter egg hunt, blowing money everywhere, to fix this.
Bronco, this is just a guess but it kind of sounds like your torque converter is losing its fluid while it sits. I THINK there's a check valve in the pump that is supposed to prevent that. It may be sticking.
Come to think of it, I noticed some fluid while I was under there the other day. I just got the oil changed, and I figured the jiffylube guys might have gotten a little messy draining the oil. It was where the engine mates to the tranny, so I think you might be on to something. I'll have go take a better look. How would I go about testing this? So you're saying that there isn't enough fluid to turn the other side of the converter when the first side (or fan, or propeller, or whatever) starts turning? And when it warms up it operates smoother. Maybe I need some torque converter 101.
Well i am going to replace the transmition fluid, filter and gasket and see if that helps and next week i will do the rear end fluid change and hopefully that solves the problem. Thanks for the infomation guys you can think of anything else i would appriate it.
