sometimes when I start my truck I get a message saying that its downloading updates.....doesnt say what kind of updates....so I guess you folks are saying the map updates are a manual process.
I would. I read that you CAN do it over WI-FI but the process takes hours to download on my laptop and it depends on the speed that the file is transmitted from the server. I have done it twice and left it overnight. So, how long can you leave your truck running on battery tenders? As they say, just because you CAN sleep with your sister doesn't make it a good idea. My suggestion is to go to the site I quoted before and see what is possible to update and do that.
You never answered the question on whether you had the 8" screen, or 12" screen. What I was really trying to find out was if you have Sync3, or Sync4....I see from other posts that you have Sync 4. The download being discussed here has been for Sync 3 (8" screen) with built in Nav. Your Sync 4 is a cloud based subscription service, not built in navigation. Being a cloud based service, I don't know that updates are needed, and if they are, it would be over the air.
I received a flyer yesterday from Ford. For $199 you can get a 5 year map subscription. That's 5 years of map updates, but no great detail on how often the maps are updated. Seems like a scam, but, thats how car companies roll. I will stick with Cyanlabs until I can't. Also I rely more on my Garmin than the dash.

I believe it is once a year, give or take. Not sure where the scam is. Garmin costs money to update too. You buy it annually or the LMT option.

My Garmin is 8 years old and I have never paid for a map update, and it updates several times a year. Still a scam since the maps are 2 years behind Garmin.

I believe mine does that too because I bought the Lifetime Map Update option
I completed the update per the instructions. Got the "installation complete" notification. Restarted the truck (more than once as it's been 3 days) and I still show the Map Version as 2/2021 in the settings. Is that normal? Seems like it should say 2022 now?

2 21 is the most recent maps. They are typically behind from what I've seen.

Ok. I didn't check the version beforehand so I don't know what it was before the update.
I see now on the Ford site it says version NA 2 21 is the update. I guess I was confused b/c my truck was built 3/21 so I was thinking that was the original map.
Clearly way behind but at least maybe they are honest on the date the maps are accurate through vs just applying the release date.
I installed it but mostly use Apple Car Play with either Apple or Google maps. I do use the built-in navigation at times and do like having it, but don't really need it. I ordered a truck without it but ended up with this truck that has it. Not sure I would spend the money on it if I were ordering since Apple and Android maps are always up to date and have most any POI you can imagine.
