Paying? These are free...for now at least. I'm on the 3rd, maybe 4th, free Nav update for my 2019.
I am in Canada and have never been offered a free update for my 2017. I just checked again and they want just over $100 for an update. It is strange they would have different rules for each country.

Things are definitely handled a little differently up there vs here.
Down here it's free to download or you have the option to pay $40 and they will send a USB that is pre loaded with the update. I won't be surprised if at some point, maybe based on vehicle age, that they no longer offer the free download. At that point I will no longer use the Ford navigation.
Are there instructions somewhere on where to get the Nav map updates and how to install? I'm a newbie to Nav maps and new MY2022 truck as well so I assume I have the current Nav map already.
I currently have an expired Nav license on my 2022 F350 Lariat. I typically use Google maps and sometimes Waze. These are fine when you are on highways and populated byways. However, I was out in Western NC this past weekend and ATT (me), Sprint (my wife) and Verizon (friends) were non functional in much of the area.
Soooooo, if Ford decides to release the Trailer Towing Navigation on the 2022 Sync 4 models as they originally promised, or we plan another road trip into the back of beyond, I will probably pay the $80 license fees. Otherwise, I agree...why bother?

I got an error message that I didnt get a picture of before I unplugged the USB drive unfortunately. Plugged it back in and said the update was completed and would take affect at the next restart. It didnt an my Nav Map is still on the original 2 20 it was before. Should I delete it an redownload it again or is there something else I should try and do?
I got the error too. See, what happened is that I downloaded the file, found it didn't work and downloaded the license file. That didn't work either. Wiped everything and downloaded it again and the license file at the same time. I think that each time you do that, the license file is different so it won't allow you to download the map files, close the page and revisit the page and download just the license file. Once you do it all in one shot, it works just fine. It will do something once you insert the USB memory card, ask that you shut it down and restart and then you need to have about an hour to do the rest of the update. I picked a day I have a long drive and do that.
Same here, though a different error. Went to Cyan labs and did it that way as well as upgraded SYNC to version 3.4. Map version 2 21
I'm not sure. Can you clarify? What is the purpose of 3.4? Yes, I understand it isn't Ford approved since it doesn't want to do it for me on the official page but what would it get me? I have a 2017 F250 Lariat with Sync 3 version 3.0.20204. I don't have Sync 3 with MyFord Touch (almost sounds pornographic). So does it add something or what? TIA

sometimes when I start my truck I get a message saying that its downloading updates.....doesnt say what kind of updates....so I guess you folks are saying the map updates are a manual process.

Yep, the Nav updates are a manual process. Download to computer then tranfer to USB, then load into truck. Even the Sync3 updates have always required a manual installation on my 2019. Wifi updates are enabled but not once has it ever worked.
I have been getting that same message on most start ups, it thinks it is downloading from a USB, but nothing is in the USB drive. I think it started with the last Sync3 update (not nav) I did several months ago. I'm also not getting full functionality from voice commands. I tried reinstalling it a couple times, I have done 2 master resets to see if it would fix it, still pops up. Just the other day I chatted with Ford about this. After wasting 15+ minutes of my time I was told all they can recommend is performing a key cycle and a master reset, both of which I had done. So they suggested taking it to a dealer.
