No MAF sensor in 2005 !?

First post as I am new to the forum. Have always found lots of goodies on here but never joined until I finally resolved an issue with my 6.0 that I had to share. So this trucks manufacturing date is 12/04 and was built with NO MAF. I had noticed with the original tuner the previous owner had installed the power band was strange and would hit like a freight train at about 3/4 throttle but had little bottom end and just wasn’t as smooth as my previous 6.0 .after reverting to stock tune it ran fine! I went to change the crap K&N CAI he installed with a better CAI and noticed the truck had 2 IAT and MAF connector was unused and capped off… I found a few posts mentioning some trucks had no MAF and guys responded that it’s only used for EGR position strategy and not necessary? This didn’t add up to me as after installing a bullydog with custom tunes from Warren Diesel the truck had that same powerband issue along with a MAF sensor signal voltage low code. I called Warren and asked if they had ever heard of this, he said no but to try plugging in a MAF and see what happens. After pulling up a engine harness diagram I found that the IAT at the filter housing is simply spliced into your IAT wires at the MAF connector I unplugged the IAT, installed a MAF sensor. I’m glad to say this fixed the powerband issues along with MAF code!

Some history:
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor was removed from F-Series vehicles with Federal calibrations beginning in November 2004.
With those engines, the Intake Air Temperature (IAT1) Sensor was mounted in the same location as the previous IAT1/MAF combination sensor.
The MAF was added back for engines after January/February (estimated) of 2005 (ie late 2005 model years).

The 05s without a MAF all seem to sound and smell a little different too.

At one point I was updating my spare parts inventory and almost bought one just to have. They are an expensive item. Now it is hard to find OEM ones, or at least it was a while back.
