Tailgate

Tailgate (thing).

Can anyone tell me what this rod is for or intended for?

Depends what year and make truck it's on but most of those on late model Ford trucks are torsion bars to help raise them. Think of it like a balance spring on a garage door.

Look at bottom edge of tailgate, center of picture, sticking down about 1 '.

i must be looking at a different picture. what i see looks kinds like the bottom of a grill insert, and some kind of ventilated panel.

He's talking about this and I still maintain it's most likely a torsion bar lift assist rod. Without knowing what year and make he's talking about, your guess is as good as anyones.
