351 stroker

You guy have convinced me, I’ll starting the hunt for a roller 351 instead of a 302. I’m still not for sure on intakes, is the eddy performer truck intake going to be the best? And what do you stroke it out to? 408? 427? Also, any tips on choosing heads and cam will be greatly appreciated

What's it going in and what is the intended use? Is this an open checkbook build or do you have a budget?

I’ll put it in my 1996 f-150, as a daily driver. I would like to be around $5000 if possible

That's going to be tough to do at $5k. Best bet is to go with something that's already built -- something like what Blueprint Engines offers -- https://blueprintengines.com/collect...r-up-to-425-hp - it's $6600 for a long block and you still need to add your own distributor and induction.

Having said that, if you want to try to piece it together yourself, you'll need to find a good donor engine, hope that it's not junk, try to find a machine shop that does good work for a reasonable price, piece together components that you think will work together, etc. It can be done, but I'm not sure if you'll save much - if anything - over what Blueprint offers.

I was going to suggest trying Car-part.com to find a used one to have rebuilt but it looks like they have really gone up in price. I used Lawton as the city since I don’t know where you are located. They started at $600 and went to over $2,000 and you still had to go get it from the junkyard so you might be better off looking for one already remanufactured and delivered. I had mine rebuilt for around $4,000

Since you have a 96 150, I'd look at finding 5.8 roller & installing it & getting it to run. (it'll hook right up with a few tweaks)

Then decide how you'll feed, tune & get the power to ground. Then build/buy a stroker with the knowledge you'll need to decide what to do.

A 5.8 gives you the displacement you were going to get with a 302 stroker without having to buy the rather expensive stroker assembly, so you're ahead there without doing anything to the bottom end of the 5.8. And even a mildly upgraded 5.8 is much stronger than a 5.0 in terms of performance so you don't need to go as far as stroking the windsor.. just put a good HCI combo on it. A 400 cubic inch anything is going to be a thirsty daily driver... right down there in the gas gussling gutter with a 460, something to consider given where gas prices are and where they could go.

Yep. Only reason not to start off with a 351 to begin with is the deck height. I'm going to go with a 347 (stroked 302) in my '69 Bronco because it's tough to fit a 351 under the hood unless you have either a low-rise intake or hood scoop.

The Edelbrock truck style intakes are set up to flow better than their stock counterparts and still accept all the stock parts in their stock positions. I can tell you from experience that the 5.8 will breath better with the Edelbrock.

The single bore throttle body eddy performer uses the same lowers as the truck version, just a different upper. Little bit shorter runners favor higher rpm operation but you would probably be hard pressed to feel much of a difference between the 2. The main disadvantage is having to reconfigure what you have to make it work.

Given your budget I would stick with a stockish 351. You will spend most of your budget on the block and rotating assembly. Iron GT40's are economical and decent heads. Paired with a healthy cam you will make plenty of power and still need a tune. Scale back the cam and you might be okay skipping a tune. Entry level aluminum heads would be cherry but they are going to eat a lot of cash. I woul not sweat the intake. Run a stock 5.8 and keep an eye out for a used Edelbrock.

A lot of good suggestions in the above posts. Skip the stroker. A good heads, cam, intake combo and tune will get you the best bang for your buck on a daily driver type rig. On a budget, something like the AFR Enforcer aluminum heads, an Eddy Truck intake, and a cam with decent street manners will easily net you 400 HP at the crank. Toss a set of headers and your choice of exhaust on there. This will come in WAY under your $5k budget, so you'll have money left over for gas. Ideally, you find a good running motor and can just give it a little refresh and not have to take it to a machine shop to save a little money as well.

I have the Edelbrock truck intake, AFR Renegade heads and a Howards cam in my '89 F350 with a PimpX ECU. She scoots along pretty well. Based on fuel usage calculation, should be something like 420ish HP. I average 12 MPG, closer to 8 when towing a 8000# trailer. No issues driving it anywhere at any time.

Heads, cam, intake, headers, mufflers, roller rockers, valve springs, valve covers, heads to the machine shop, tuner, there is your $5000.
No point in stroking it for a daily, also your budget will be used up.
