I have found 2 351 Windsor engines complete, in '77-'78 T-Birds,(2v)is there much REAL advantage in swapping from a same year 302 to the 351? or am I going to just have more weight to pull, I understand the heads are the same on the 302 and the 351W in these years, theres an aftermarket 4v on 1 of these engines that I may grab too, what kind of STOCK HP is the 351 going to make, vs the 302?? comments welcome!!
Thanks!!!!-Supercab
You are correct in that the heads are the same on the 302s and 351ws in 77, but the 351 having a 3.5" stroke compared to the 302s 3" stroke makes a world of difference. I would make the swap if the 302 needed rebuilt anyway.
Thanks, Nathan, I think you're right, plus may be I could find a set of the earlier '69-'70 351 W heads during the rebuild, may be a small cam would help, too!! -Supercab
Nathan, I guess its just you & me on this 351 Windsor thing, I was at the yard again today, and verified that one of the engines has jumped timing, probably a very loose chain, or the infamous fiberglas cam gear, I turned it over by hand from the harmonic balancer bolt, it turned freely, they will sell me the whole engine with all accessories in place as a rebuilder for $200.00, I was thinking of offering $300.00 for both along with rebuildable trannys, one of which is an FMX, I've heard good & bad about the FMX, I have a '79 Thunderbird with a 302 & FMX with 92k original miles, and the FMX is perfect, the one 351 looks all original, and thats what I like to start with, the other looks a little hot rodded, with its Offenhauser 4v, & late model Mustang 5.0 valve covers, & Edelbrock carb, also I seem to remember back in the early 70s that FORD made special bolts to swap '69 351 W heads onto 289s &302s, which I did on a 289 in a '65 Falcon, may be THOSE bolts would work, I've forgotten just what they were size wise.-Supercab
Those bolts will work, if you can find them anymore. I dont know if anyone makes them. Trannies, I like c6, but Ive never run a FMX to know how they are. Good luck!
I also think that ARP makes a conversion bolt that would work with the heads that you are talking about. You can get 4V heads from older or newer 351s or even from the hotter setups that year on some of the cars like the Crown Victoria and I would definitely get the larger heads (they have larger ports), then go with an Edelbrock manifold and I really like the Edelbrock 600 cfm with the electric choke. It works great. If you got the money, go with the Edelbrock heads and a mild Edelbrock cam.
I'm confused!!!!!! If you're using the 351 and want to swap out earlier 351 heads there'd be no need to drill, tap or anything else.
I've read many times DO NOT tap a 302 block to accept 1/2" bolts, It will crack eventially. If your head has 1/2" holes and you want to bolt them on a 302 block Edelbrock makes spacers.
Lastly, I'd run a TFS head or World head or even an Edelbrock head all which can be had for around $1000. The iron World heads are complete for $800.
