As a product of my penny pinching attitude and the lack of bullnoses for sale in my area I've come to the question. How hard is it too put 87-96 ford clutch+brake setups in an 84? I wanna swap from my c6 to a zf5 and I've been told to get the clutch+ from a 84 but I'm curious how bad avoiding it would be any thoughts?
You have a better chance of success by buying the same year clutch components as the year transmission you are using. If you want to save some money, look up the individual pieces on rockauto, autozone, napa, etc and get the parts numbers that you have for the 1984, and then look up the year truck the transmission came from and see what those part numbers are. The store wants to keep as little inventory as possible, so if they are the same it will say so and you are safe to swap. If the part numbers are different, you had better use the parts from the later truck whose transmission you are using.
To get a ZF conversion you will need to find a complete doner vehicle with the same engine type, and rear axle as yours. Clutches are torque sized, 300 six gets 11" with torsional springs to match and the 460 gets the 12 or 12 1/4 inch clutch. Brakes are sized by GVW, 1/2 ton are front single piston caliper and the rear are 11 x 2 1/4. Light 3/4 tons have odd combinations, and on up by front and rear axle GVW. My 81 F-250 motorhome chassis has heavy front brakes with the 12 x 2 1/2 lighter brakes on a semi-floater Dana 60 axle. So there you go......
