I am trying to figure out the speedometer on my 1950 Ford/mercury pick up truck. The speedometer cable does not appear to be binding. I can turn it freely when it is not connected to the speedometer.
When I disconnect the speedometer from the cable, the speedometer turns freely. If I put a small, square piece in the speedometer, it operates correctly with a drill.
When I connect the two together, suddenly, everything is jammed, and I cannot turn the cable (from the transmission end) If I back off the cable on the back of the speedometer to be as loose as possible, it sometimes works, and sometimes the speedometer gets stuck.
Any help that someone could give me would be much appreciated.
how old is the cable? might be frayed a bit on the inside, that added torque might be binding it up. Not sure if you can hook up and run drill in reverse. but it might confirm this?

I have taken the inside of the cable out, and it all looked good. I greased it and put it back in. I have tried running it in both forward and reverse, and it does not budge when I connect it to the speedometer. I find it bizarre, because the speedometer continues to run freely when I turn it with my finger, or with a small insert.
