This probably isn't news to anyone who has updated their nav database recently, but I had to learn it the hard way so I'll pass it along.
I was trying to install a nav update from USB stick in my 2017 SD and DW's 2016 Escape and neither of them would install because they said the wrong version of Sync was installed. However, both units reported having the latest version of Sync when I scanned to see if there was an update. Both were also connected to Wifi and set to auto update.
Finally got PO'ed and went online to help.ford.com and found that despite what the vehicle units were reporting, they were not running the latest version of Sync. Downloaded (one time for both vehicles) the Sync update to a USB stick and installed it. After that the nav update installed no problem. Took over an hour, but no problem.
So don't believe the auto scan when it reports you're running the latest version.
My 2019 does not update Sync over the air so I've always used the USB method and check the Ford Owner site. I installed the new maps today and didn't have any issue.

Same, my 2019 has never done an auto update even though it is enabled and parked in wifi range of my house. I always have to go to the website to check for and download Sync updates. I just did the Nav update 2 days ago, already knew my Sync version was up to date since I checked that first. I have seen the error on a previous Nav update when my Sync version wasn' the newest.
Thank you all for your comments, as you've confirmed my point. The auto sync update doesn't work, but the download to a USB stick does.
Maybe this will save someone from the frustration of not being able to update their nav because Sync says it is updated, but is not. Another gift from Sync.
