Few Questions Here, Can i put a 302 in my 1950 Ford F-5 Wrecker it currently has a 223 six in it that knocks like hell and is too weak to tow anything.
I got this truck for $500 last summer and it was built in 1956 by my best Friends great grandpa who died last year, the truck has over 300,000 miles on it and the 223 is the second motor to be put in the truck. It was sitting since 1988 and i revived it and drove it home in one day. i need to know if i can put a 302 in it because i cant afford a flathead or y block to put in it and the 223 is too weak.
You mean a 226? The 6's hp is not that far from the V8's you have mentioned. Your engine might be tired, but it fits. Depending on the year of 302 you're referring to some of the years were pretty low hp. I don't think a 302 will bolt to anything in a 50 F5 without lots of adaption. Would be best if you could rebuild what you have. Nothing against 302's and I have several and have towed things with them when I've have had to. Little slower speed and a lot of rpms and a fair share of overheating. I would never build a truck for towing with a 302. It's your truck though.
it has a 223 out of a 1958 ford f100 i did not do this conversion the previous owner did it in the 70s and i dont know if it shares the same bellhousing pattern as a 302
it has the original non syncro crashbox still though and factory ford flathead starter retained in the swap

There are adapter bellhousings available that will mate the 302 to the old flathead transmissions. They're kind of hard to find but do pop up on ebay from time to time. I don't believe they're in production anymore.
You may find it simpler to get a 70's truck 4 speed from a small block F100 to go with the 302 and swap the whole kit in together.
ok thanks but i am going to go the Fe and five speed route though because i have parts for them already and dont use the truck often but when i do i need it to have power because i have used it to pull a loaded cattle truck and trailer out of a ditch
I Repeat this is a f-500 tow rig with a Tulsa winch co 16,000 pound winch and used for towing my **** around and i am either going with a motor swap or a motor and trans from a 70s or 80s f-500 through f-800 truck because where i am at in Kansas i can get them under 150,000 miles running for under $750.00 and i would use that, so will a 302 work and can i find a listing for a kit for one because the crash-box is very fun to drive and i want to keep it but if i cant use it then it has to go.
I love that you guys have given me such good advice but we are getting off topic
At this point I can only recommend taking care of your mom, you can revive truck later and keep it alive. Entire drivetrain swaps do not happen fast unless you are on you tube, and end up being the end of projects for the anxious. All of the above post is entirely my opinion. Sorry if it offends anyone.
I don't need this to be swapped fast i wouldn't care if it took 3 months to do i want to make it reliable and powerful. I have patience i have been trying to get a 1965 c-10 running for 2 years now.
