Last weekend we towed the RV trailer for the first time since January. Things were fine headed out, but when backing the RV into the driveway when back home, the Ex sure seemed like the transmission was slipping a bit. Today we drove it without trailer. No issues backing out of the driveway, but twice when backing up out in town it was definitely slipping in reverse. One of the times was on dirt and I tried 4-low…same result, barely moved. No issues at all in drive.
2000 7.3 4x4 Excursion, ~210,000 miles. I’m assuming the transmission is original. Transmission was flushed and filled with Mobil 1 ATF less than 2 years and 10,000 miles ago. Fluid does smell somewhat burnt but color looks ok. Level when at operating temperature is about 1/2 way into the “H” cross-hatched area.
Do I have any options other than a new or rebuilt transmission?
I thought the transmission was failing a year ago. Just turned out to be bad tunes. I got an extra year and around 6k miles out of it. Not complaining👍
Being optimistic about a mechanical failure or impending failure is a good trait to have.
Another optimistic outlook is that the 22 year old 4R100 brought Sandra and her belongings home safely from CO and you are right where you should be for the 4R100 lifespan based on internet lore and armchair experts like myself.
There are several options available to you somewhat locally going "forward" with the repair of not going "reverse".
Keep us informed Eric and let us know if we can be of assistance in anyway.
EDIT: I don't know if using 2WD low in reverse while backing the RV up will provide more longevity to your new transmission, but it sure makes backing a heavy load easier on the driver. At least in my opinion.
Went with a transmission shop in Mineral Bluff, GA that SkySkiJason recommended. He apparently builds a real nice transmission. Problem is I live 3+ hours away from there. When Bobby found that out he recommended I get a national rebuild brand, either Jasper or American Transmission for their nationwide warranty. He could only warranty his rebuild if I brought it to him. Made sense. He called both Jasper and American on speaker and got a quote. Bobby gave me that price on the transmission (no markup), only making money on the install. I went with the American Transmission with a 36mo/100,000mi warranty. It was supposed to be a 10 working day delivery and then another 3-5 days to install...so about Thanksgiving. Transmission showed up at his shop the next day and Bobby had it installed and test driven in less than a week. So far, so good!
