Hello, new to the forum. I am going to replace my distributor with a H.E.I. and was wondering if the electronic box on the fender only works the distributor or is it needed for something else? Can it be removed or is it needed? Thanks
I Think it can be removed. If you’re changing to a different system. But I’m not sure so I’m just commenting to put this back up to the top of the pack so hopefully somebody a little wiser can answer your question. But if you’re going to HEI I don’t think you need it.
It can be removed. HEI distributors have the ignition modules built into them. There will be no other use for the module once you install the HEI distributor.
I replaced mine in my 300 as the module was melting down. So now it starts up really fast and runs great, No need to carry an extra module...
HOWEVER, as Dave mentioned, it is a real PITA to set timing, I would assume it is the same on the V8.
Would I do it again,, not sure.
Alex
It is not any harder on the 351M to set timing even with a/c. I have plenty of movement when turning the distributor to set timing. I am very happy with mine but the only drawback was making custom spark plug wires to fit the ford/chebby mash up. I would do it if I were to build another one.
My DS has been flawless from day 1 except when the module lost it's potting back a few short years ago, cheap, easy roadside swap. Spares are cheap. I've had more problems with GM HEI when I had them. I never had problems with points though.
But NO, the box on the fender apron is not used with HEI.
Thanks guys for answering his question I knew you guys that had done the swaps before could get him the answer he needed. I didn’t think you needed it but I wasn’t sure if it ran something else also.
