My 99 4x4 with rebuilt trans just started throwing some strange codes, but the most common code is P0500. The speedometer quit working and OD light started flashing, along with hard shifts. After some reading here it looks like a bad VSS can cause all kinds of strange symptoms so I’m going to try that first. I can’t find an OEM Motorcraft replacement, do y’all recommend any particular brand of aftermarket.
All those sound like a bad sensor. Sometimes removing it and cleaning it help, not always though. It's 23 years old anyways.
F81Z7M101BA seems to be available from most sources.
It's just a speed sensor, and the ford ones are pretty pricey. I'd be fine with a Delphi, or the higher end store brand with a decent warranty.
They're likely all from the same place anymore anyways.

OK, the part number I was given from Ford was F85Z9E731AB. He said it was no longer made and didn't have a replacement number, but every parts house around here has aftermarket for it. I figured I would give the aftermarket a shot, like you said it's just a speed sensor and pretty easy to change.
The dude at ford said your number was the trans sensor. I wound up getting one from advanced auto. Put it in last night and so far so good. Thanks for the response.
