Motor Trans swap
Greetings,
I am planning to install a SBF (carburerated for simplicity, low HP) with a C4 (maybe C6?) into my truck during the winter months. Not too concerened with originality, looking to make it easier for my wife to drive and to keep this as low cost as possible without being "cheap" if that makes sense. Im pretty good with my hands and have welders, grinders etc.
Does anyone have any real world experience on this change?
Some of the items I know that will need to be addressed:
- Would the new overall length (motor and trans) be shorter or longer than the currenet motor and trans?
- Drive shaft will need to be fabricated. Since I have the 2 two piece shaft with a carrier bearing, just modify the shorter of the 2?
- I want to use the original speedo and cable(?), how did you pull that off? Just change the drive gear?
- Replace the generator with alternator. Does that eliminate the need for a voltage regulator?
- Floor shifter for the auto trans? This seems like the easist way to pull this off but????
- Fab up motor and trans mounts
I know I am missing a bunch of other items (no ego here) so feel free to chime in with other thoughts or pain points that you may have experienced in making this switch.
As always thanks for your input,
Ken

I will try to answer a couple of your questions. (I am in Sacramento) Assuming the work I did on my 66 is similar. I know there are differences in the pre-65 though.
I just changed my 66 short bed from 3 speed column shift to a C4 with a column shift. My truck has a 300 straight six.
I did not want to trip over a floor shifter so I had to change the column to an automatic column. (I have another 65 automatic column that needs a little work but would be usable for you if interested). I did have to shorten my driveshaft as the C 4 tail shaft was longer. My truck is a short bed so I did not have two driveshafts to deal with but I would think that shortening the one between the carrier bearing and the tail shaft would make sense.
on mine, The manual transmission cross member was reused and the trans mount was exactly the same. No new cross member required. I had two sets of holes in my frame and I used the rear holes.
The alternator from Ford for my 66 seems would be a perfect fit and does have the external voltage regulator still. Or, use a newer alternator (one wire type) with an internal voltage regulator.
Don’t know about motor mounts. I hope there are enough similarities between the 64 and the 66 that this helped you.
