I am sure it's been covered before but the search on this forum is not great so here goes. I have a 2002 F-250 CCLB 5.4L 4WD @225,000 miles. Yes, actually love this truck so not looking for another anytime soon. If the lottery comes in, then maybe. So we all can attest to some mysterious oil leakage, put in 6 quarts and 3 weeks later need a Quart or 2 more. I don't get ANY spotting on the driveway so it's all while driving. I do notice passenger side under the exhaust manifold can be showing the leak as it's a bit oily in appearance. I don't see any on the driver side. I have never changed the value covers or had it done. Can it be the gasketing? Will the shop have to pull the engine out to do the job correctly? How far will you go to get it resolved so that the oil fly-away will cease?
To any of the FTE group, who has removed valve covers and replaced the gasketing? If you have done it, how long did it take you? What other components did you remove to get the valve cover off? I saw a video in which you had to remove the Evaporator. This (old gasket) could be the cause of the leak...
So mine burned oil not as much but it did. One way I could tell it was burning oil is my exhaust manifolds that had a slight leak would
show it a little bit when looking at it up through the wheel well.
Valve covers on them isn't really to bad. When I did mine I took my front 2 tires off and dropped it down to make it alot easier to reach the back of the motor.
It helps my hand are smaller than most. No a shop shouldn't have to lift the cab or drop the motor, at that point if they ever do you might as well get a new motor.
Took me a couple hours all doing it myself and taking my time. Ended up not seating on side correctly and it was immediately apparent where I was leaking oil from this after.
It's been awhile since I did it so I don't remember all the steps but it wasn't that bad at all. Removed coils and wiring for injectors and gently pushed it all out of the way.
When you re-seat the gasket reach around the ENTIRE head and feel that its all seated properly to avoid my mistake.
