V10 Crate engine suggestions
Hi all, I reviewed some older threads regarding this topic, and came up somewhat inconclusive....not to mention they are all very old!
I will likely be replacing a V10 in a customers 2005 Excursion, and I'm wondering what anyone else's experiences have been sourcing a V10 in the last few years.
I'm pretty skeptical on all these rebuilders/reman websites I see online, and have not yet contacted a Ford dealer (partially for fear of getting laughed at- lol) not really tho. Anyway, please let me know what you have come across or if you have any advice on where to pick up a good V10. My customer is adamantly against a boneyard engine....of course. Thanks again for all your help!

Jasper ain't what they used to be. Just had a customer in today with his 5.4 Jasper reman that blew a head gasket right at the 100k warranty mark. I hear same problems in their V-10 line.
So look around for a guide i have seen before, regarding converting a 2019 2 valve V10 engine to work in an excursion, 99-04 F250/F350, or older motor home, its not terribly involved.
Do not quote me on this, but I believe you need the upper and lower intake, throttle body assembly, engine harness, and all of the sensors including cam and crank sensors, injectors, and fuel rail, and everything to swap them over onto a 2019 2 valve V10 engine.
The 2019 2 valve V10s are throttle by wire, however the internals are all the same other than some minor improvements which are more or less inconsequential or so i have read, so all you essentially have to do is convert it back to cable driven intake & throttle body, and change out ALL of the electronics on the engine itself, with their counterparts from the 2005 engine, as in put the 2005 harness, sensors, and everything that is different, onto the newer engine, from the older engine.
Many people are not aware the 2 valve V10 was available all the way up to 2019 for specialty purposes like motor homes, large buses, etc, but it was, just make sure you do not end up with a 3V V10 by mistake, while I'm pretty sure its possible to convert one of those, its 10x more work, and requires cutting, welding, re-tuning the PCM, and adapting an entire laundry list of things, where as the newer 2V is something that can supposedly be done over a weekend.
It actually might be something worth asking ford as well, I would not be surprised if they have a guide to do just this for buses, motor homes and commercial vehicles that use the V10, to replace the engine with the newer V10 which is internally identical, and the guide should give you everything you need to do the excursion.
You may also have to swap over the oil pan, and pickup tube, and flex plate, but i am not 100% sure.

I went with a Ford Reman about two (2) years ago. Put about 10,000 miles on it so far and it seems to be doing pretty well.
Four (4) years ago I did a Ford Reman tranny and so far, so good.
I thought about going with a Jasper because I had one put in my 84’ S-10 and it is doing fine.
I think it’s a crap shoot between them, so I don’t think you will go wrong, either way.

Unfortunately I spun a main bearing on my 6.8L V10. It seems the 6.8L V10 is popular Fleet motor and I am having to wait a few weeks to get my build shipped. The price on the crate motor is around 5.5k. Another $500 hundred for an installation kit that replaces water pump, hoses, belts, wires and plugs. Depending what you want in the heart of the motor, they offer component upgrades going up from the 5.5k.. There are cheap rebuilds down to 4k on some other sites, but I did not like the purchase process, warranty, and installation. Most builders charge core charge. Once you return the old motor you get a credit back to your account.
Jasper had the best package deal I could find, Nationwide network for Installers. Summit and Jegs offer motors but I still needed and Installer.
If anyone has something constructive to add please do so, I am still waiting on my motor, eta from Jasper is 3 weeks.
Please share with the forum if you have a better solution.
Have a fine day and a better tomorrow,
Jack .

if you were in arizona i would have recommended the shop that did mine, the whole build was 5500, and included upgrades of all sorts, so its better than stock.

Find a good local builder. Wiseco also has a piston that raises compression height for better quench. Semi custom and take about a month to get.
Im using those in my build with K1 rods.
Never had good luck with Jasper engines.

I’m in Az what builder did you use?
The Engine Builders, in Glendale Arizona.
Numerous high speed trips back and fourth to god forsaken california now on the build, no issues at all, and i have had the truck up to 115 MPH, Runs amazing.

Funny, as I read the old part of the thread, knowing a new one must have come for it to be on the relevant list, I would have suggested a local builder. The conclusion to the thread (most recent posts) are, to find a local builder.
Wayne Smothers installed my TruTrac in the rear differential.
he is going to remove the old Warn Winch behind the Ranch Hand bumper, and install the new 12k Badlands winch with synthetic rope.
the Warn winch won't work anymore, and it has a steel rope, that is a mess.
