Help with injector swap

Recently installed Bitterroot injectors frx and hpx from riffraff. Truck ran fine with exception of a slight miss at idle (which was annoying and sparked the swap) and at 45 to 55 mph. Now after the swap i hardley have enough power to move my vehicle out of my driveway, it billows black smoke on load and when idling it is also expelling black smoke but not nearly as bad as when im on it. It has a knock as well and i though it was rod but it has to be injector. I got it on the road, it made 15lbs of boost, got to 40 mph and my egt went from 700* to 200 then 100. I retorqued injectors to 130in lbs and ensured all of them were squirting oil. Made sure no rags made it into the intake. Screen in plenums was clear and as far as i know if i lost a rag it would have been stuck right there.

On first start up the truck idled like a dream compared to what i had. It knocked for a bit but eventually went away. Had the black smoke at idle but figured it was oul that got into the cylinders when installing injectors and it woumd burn off. It got worse after retorque i think. Now it shakes and knocks all the time.

You installed stock injectors? Checked the intercooler boots and pipes for leaks?

Check with Bitterroot that you got the correct injectors.

Black smoke is burnt fuel with not enough air in the mix. If all you changed was injectors, this is where I would go next.

Check all your injector connections as well. Big 42 pin plug, connections at the external UVCH plugs and under the cover at each injector. Ohm them out as well from the 42 pin plug to ground. This is free (except for a little time) and will rule some things out

Ok got new orings and washers for the old injectors. Had an extra set i sent in for a core charge so i had a known set still thankfully. Put the. In today, filled the oil rails through the icp sensor hole and the hpop through the allen head bolt. Fired right up and ran just as poor as it did before i pulled my injectors the first time lol. I am pretty confident i pushed some dirt into the fuel rail at this point. Ive put 20 miles on the truck and no black smoke. Had some white smoke for a bit but it cleared up quickly. Hope to send the new injectors back to bitteroot on tuesday and get them fixed. Happy labor day weekend guys and girls!

Ok confirmed by bitteroot i somehow dirtied up my brand new injectors and shot myself in the foot, paid for injectors twice and did 3 times more work than i had too because i didnt prep the target well enough before starting. I would have given you guys the whole scoop as it happened but im recovering from a broken elbow and wasnt able to instal the new injectors until yesterday. The truck now seemingly runs fine. I do have a vibration at idle. Definitely not shaking anymore tho which is so nice! My shutter at 45-55 is gone as well so no more dropping out of overdrive when going through town. Not completely sold however because despite driving for over 300 miles i still have an engine rpm hunt issue that sounds like the ac clutch is kicking on and off but i watched it while i was cleaning the engine off and its just doing it on its own. My only hope is theres still air because i never was able to really get on it and push the engine hard since i blew my boot off on my way back from houston. Thank you guys for your help just wanted to give you the results to kind of close this.

I'd love to know more about your lack of prep, and how you feel you dirtied up the injectors. I just did a whole lot of top work, including injectors, pulled each injector, let everything drain into the cylinders. I had to replace cups too. Mine fired up pretty easily, and I never felt there was a remaining air issue after just a few minutes of idle.

Ok so i never really cleaned the layer of gunk off from the top of the engine and when i went to instal the frx i think i scrapped some off and it got a direct path to the fuel rail. I had a hard time getting the fitting to thread into the hole and spent most of my time blindly twisting with 2 fingers only to drop it, fish it out, clean old thread sealant off and applying clean sealant before reattempting. Its the only way i can think of that i may have gotten contaminants in the system. Bores were spotless, vacuumed the fuel and oil gallerys out with a shop vac and a hose from my handheld transfer pump. Its also the only difference between the other times ive swapped the injectors. My old set ran fine when i put them in and when i got this set back from bitteroot they definitely run better than they did the first time i installed them.

So i have 4 cylinders not reading 0. One is worrying but all else seems good with the truck. About to drive to arizona pulling a trailer. Gonna have to live with this for the time being and maybe do a compression test when i get back. I am pretty sure i had 3 cylinders that were off before swapping injectors but i dont have photos from my old phone to reference. Either way i think this is wjere my slight shake or vibration is coming from. I will post any changes whenever i make them.

I also installed the FRx with my new injectors and was VERY concerned about exactly what you describe. I figured if anything did fall in that hole, I could flush it back to the tank via the newly established return path out of the heads. So before I tried to fire it up I let the fuel pump prime SEVERAL times. This strategy was either successful, or I managed not to get anything into the rails. I'll never know.

Before i even left on my trip i got a bad surge. Replaced the icp and cleaned the ipr in arizona as i had time and bought both units before leaving. Left the ipr at the house tho soni cleaned the one i had. Number 8 hovers around 7 now but surge is there and im about to rip my wiring harness out tomorrow and strip the plastic off. Doing this because i found a bare wire in the loom when installing the new pigtail for the icp. No compression test yet but thats on the list if my wiring harness doesnt fix anything. Keeping you guys updated.
