So after 7 years of an oil lk in the valley I finally pulled and resealed my hpop. however as I am putting it back together. as I was trying to torque the gear drive bolt to 95 pounds it felt like it stripped out..Ipulled the boltout looked in as best as i could see everything looked ok..try torque again and same thing happened. pulled everythingback apart and verified the threads in the pump are goodgoing to try again tomorrow. What would cause the feeling of stripping the threads from the pump? I am taking my torque wrench to work and verifiy the settings on our torque check machine. Any ideas what might have caused this? Iwas expecting to eventually turn the motor some but never got to that point..before it felt like it stripped.. thanks for any info....
using an 18 mm socket...socket never slipped felt like threads stripped ..i think after i pulled it all back out i may not have had the gear all the way on gonna work on it more when I get home today
The only other thing that comes to mind is the socket. I've had a few split over the years and they'll behave like a stripped bolt. Some you couldn't see the crack until torque was applied.
Is the torque wrench the "break away or snap" type? I don't know the official name for it and I am too lazy to look it up right now. Perhaps the tool is damaged and provides a false sense of movement on the fastener.
Just shooting in the dark here as my first thought was the engine was turning over, but you said that wasn't happening.
So I took the wrench to work and checked calibration..it’s fine . pulled the pump out and checked everything visually got it all back together torqued and tried to start.. no oil pressure at all pulled the front cover and it looks like the gear is not all the way on . About a 1/8 inch or so shy of flush. Looks even all the way around.. is there any way with out taking it all apart to get it the rest of the way on? Would over torquing it pull it in then back off the bolt and reset to proper torque?
Take the drive gear bolt and washer off and reach in and wiggle the gear into place properly, then reinstall the gear bolt and washer and torque to spec. No need to remove the pump or reservoir.
How did you try to start it? What was your procedure, crank time, number of attempts? Did you verify the oil was gravity feeding to the heads and the pump wasn't air locked? What all was removed when you first pulled the hpop? So is it torqueing properly now?
tried to start it 6 -8 times about 30 - 40 seconds each time saturday and sunday . the last 2 times I noticed there was no oil pressure at all ... I got it all back apart yesterday and found out the gear was fully seated on the pump. However before that I was trying to make itwas seated and lost a stainless thin washer down the timing coverand cannot find it . So other than having to pull the oil pan most likely to find washer. I am wondering if it just takes that long to get oil pressure back in the system. I changed out the stock lines with high pressure lines after reading and watching several articles. So everything was void of oil I did fill up the reservoir and verified it was full after a few start attempts ..Judt frustrating after finalyy trying to get a minimal oil lk fixed now I induced all kinds of ****

If you're referring to the oil gauge in the cluster that's a lpop gauge. If not then I would loosen the hoses at the heads to check for oil. If no oil there then leave them loose and the oil should gravity through the pump pushing the air out as it goes.
washer came from me being a dum a$$ trying to pull gear onto pump when it was already seated....yes cluster gauge and tach were not moving at all while cranking....
Sorry you having all this trouble. At this point, with a washer dropped down inside the front cover, I would not do any cranking. It is most likely time to pull the engine and remove the oil pan & or front cover to recover the washer before it does major damage.
It looks like you are in GA, maybe you can link up with @SkySkiJason and get all fixed up and back on the road.
