Identifying LS Diff/Possible issues
Excuse my very greeness. I was checking out a rear end today and wondered if this was usual. It's sitting on jacks with no tires or driveshaft. When I spin one axle shaft by hand the other side spins in the same direction but skips intermittently. If I hold the driveshaft yoke they spin at the same speed, no skipping.
Is that usual or a sign of something being wrong?

If the pinion turns rather than the wheel that doesn't mean much on an open rear. on a posi they should both turn the same direction smoothly.
When you hold the pinion do they turn the opposite direction ? if so you have an open diff. if they turn the same direction you have a problem.

On a posi rear if you hold the pinion you souldn't be able to turn the either wheel. if it's open they go opposite directions.
I'm guessing your gears or an axle are toast .. if it's a 60 pull the cover and look.
