Hello. Figured this thread may be my best bet. I need to find a timing pointer for my motor, I cannot find a timing pointer for my truck. It was left out when last rebuit. Also, if anyone knows where I can source one, I will also need to know the thread size of the smaller timing pointer bolt.
Hit the junkyard
Then you can get a pointer and the bolts
There is a few for sale on ebay et al. but 30 bucks and no bolts.
There are several aftermarket billet aluminum ones available
Good luck
Those bolts for the timing cover are 5/16 x 18 for the smaller ones and 3/8 x 16 for the bigger ones in the bottom, I believe

Are you mentioning the reproduction ones? I was not aure if they'd also work on EFI motors.
I think the one on ebay for 30 bucks is for a fuelie
My 70 engine has one real small machine screw that just goes into the aluminum front cover and uses the bottom front cover bolt for the other
That machine screw is 10-32 or some such and the bottom bolt on mine is 5/16 not 3/8
So your 97 should have 2 holes in it and one is bigger
Here is a pic of my 70
D2DV 6200 AA is one with both a pointer and the mag timing probe hole for old scopes
I see the front covers are the same 69-97 with the exception of the fuel pump boss
