460 efi timing bump

Hello all,
I have a 1996 f350 obd2 and im not quite sure what the factory timing is supposed to be, so my question is can I bump up the timing to 12* like so many have done? Being the truck is obd2 i dont know if I change the base timing if it will throw a c.e.l. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You can try it. It won't hurt anything to just try it and it won't turn on the CEL. Just listen for pinging and if so you will need to set it back to 10 which is factory setting I believe.

Your right i can try it and see what happens. Its only one bolt. It was just confusing me because the emissions label states the timing is not adjustable which is incorrect. There is a spark output connector on the firewall. I know the OBD1 and map cars is supposed to be a small power increase, but mine is OBD2 and maf. Ill try it, thanks for the advice.

OBD2 and MAF doesn't matter in this case, it's still the EXACT same motor that was used in OBD1 SD trucks so the base timing is set and can be adjusted the same way.

Ok, thank you for the response. I havnt quite got the time to mess with the timing till the weekend, because my timing light is currently being borrowed. But I will check and adjust the timing if necessary this weekend. Shoot. It may even already be at 12 but I dont know until I throw a light on it.

Be sure to pull the SPOUT before you adjust.

Bump it ahead until it pings or kicks when you hot-start it...then back it off a bit. Eventually you'll find that sweet spot where it runs the best for YOUR kind of driving...THEN check it with a light for future reference...or not. I've been doing it that way for 50+ years on every Ford truck or car I've ever owned and have never had timing related engine damage. FWIW, the best setting on my '97 F350 4X4, w/460, ZF5 happens to be 16-18 degrees...even 20+ if I throw some 91 octane in it...and after 115K miles...no problems...and I get 11-14 MPG.

Ok. Ill give it a shot tomorrow. I just finished a new radiator and all new hoses today. Tomorrow when I go visit my dad (he has my timing light) ill set the timing and see how it goes. I'll start with an additional 2 degrees and go from there. Thank you.

Hey guys. I dont like to leave anything I started unfinished so I wanted to update those who chimed in and gave me some advise. Here is what I found. My timing was correct at 10*.
I adjusted my timing initially to 12*. Then after road test i decided to give it another small bump so i adjusted it to 14*. I am going to leave it there for now and see how it does for awhile. I am happy with the outcome, I road tested it and it definitely feels like it has an increase in power as well as feels smoother when driving. Also, I noticed after the adjustment the vehicle fires quicker then it did before and my coolant gauge was reading with the needle on the "N" on my way home. Normally it is on the "O". So it seems to be running cooler. And lastly, it usually takes 1/4 to my folks house and 1/4 back home for the fuel consumption. Today was 1/4 on the way there, adjusted timing, and consumption was slightly less, like one needle width, on the way back. Possible slight increase in fuel milage but I never calculate that. With all that being said im leaving it at 14 because I was unloaded and we have crappy 87 oct here. I need to see if it pings with a load. Needless to say I was.happy with the results, even if it was all just a placebo effect. Anyways, thank you for you advise.
