I havent said if I prefer one over the other yet. But I have sold all my t4 stuff, more simply to help free up finances for life adjustments. Either way I have data and opinions which I will share soon. Then its back to stockish truck and shut down my hobby and free up my time
Lol. Nope. Time for building new business ventures for both my wife and I. Plus more time with kiddos.
Selling my performance parts will help free up cash to buy a cheapish used high top conversion van since my handicapped son is getting big and the mini van is getting too small, other then for short errand runs
Heck I even bought a beefer and had it butchered for filling my freezer so I do not have to spend as much time deer hunting
I could see swapping the motor if most of the complaints are with it but why bother with the transmission is my thought. Unless the bolt holes for the clutch pedal already exist on the firewall and the template for the transmission tunnel is clearly marked, it would be tough to get it as right as a factory manual transmission truck. Plus isn't there an electrical pigtail that connects to the clutch switch that probably doesn't exist on an automatic truck? Not trying to pester you with obnoxious technical questions but if the idea is to go back to keeping it simple and reliable my vote would be leave it an automatic and sell the ZF6. They are worth decent money.

the zf6 swap part of it is easy peasy. The Clutch safety switch wires are there with a plug on them. The clutch pedal studs are in place, all I need is to cut zf6 transmission tunnel out of parts truck and cut the auto tunnel out and swap it(self tapping screws and sealer). Splice a wire in the auto trans harness, splice in for the reverse lights sensor, or just swap all the harnesses, It should be a single days job to do the zf6 swap.
I have gone back and forth a lot on the zf6 swap. The auto is nice in ways, but I have my work/plow truck with a zf6 and it is much nicer to tow with in the mountains and back roads.
As is, I know I will need a better auto at some point, if I leave it auto, where as this zf6 and clutch will last a lot longer. I could sell the zf6 swap and get 3/4 of the money for a sam wyse stage 1 soooo there needs to be lots of thought. All in all I really really need the 3rd gear ratio (3rd on the **** numbering) the 4r is always in the wrong spot going from 2-3 on my back roads never at the correct rpm. The zf6 is nice in the snow, no sudden downshifts, and easy to lug it up a slick steep hill.
With swapping engines, half the work of the trans swap is already done
You know he does bring up a good point. If “going back stock” and “keeping it simple”, adding in a ZF6 swap causes deviation from stock and the (small) risks associated with it. Meaning, I thought the point was in getting away from anything fabbed or custom to help this troublesome truck play nice for a change.
I’m surprised there are still concerns with gear gaps with your 4.30’s. At least surprised the concerns are big enough to cause a desire for swap anyhow.
If I remember correctly, you loved the auto when plowing…. Maybe the plow truck can inherit the auto.
Now about the minivan… yeah, downgrade to our van as her daily to help pay for the big van.

You know Eric better than that... The only way he could go to completely stock is if you double dog dare him like in A Christmas Story.

The auto just doesnt have the same gearing as the zf6, the auto has been a pia to get tuned how I want. The zf6 is stock, so it will still be stock, just with a zf6 vs a 4r100, no big deal.
I had thought about the auto for the plow truck. It wont hold up to what I do to that thing, plus too much work, gave up on that last fall.
wifey said no way is she giving up her van lol
Finally, the zf6 actually increases the future resale value of my truck, if you catch my drift…

Absolutely does in my area. A lot of guys looking into a truck like this around here wont even look at an auto, and they complain the new trucks don’t come with a manual

I guess in a niche market. On a whole I believe it makes no difference. A quality built automatic typically lasts the life of the truck.

Whether or not the auto lasts isnt what they care about. They want manual. Any zf6 truck in the surrounding area sells 3 times faster for %30 more around here.
