Starting Problems

Sometimes my 2010 F150 doesn't start when I turn the key. Everything else seems to work but the starter doesn't turn over. After trying it several times I can usually get it to start but sometimes that doesn't work. Then I can try the next day and it works. I have tried in Park, in neutral, opened the door, shut the door, wiggled everything I can and nothing seems to help. What do I look for? Is there a way to add a starter button?

Likely the starter solenoid............ try tapping on it with a hammer (lightly)

Could also be the starter relay and yes there's a way to install a push button for starting. Too complicated to get into it here, suggest you seek a professional auto tech that has the know how and tools/equipment to do it.

Could be any of a lot of things, from one end to the other of the circuit. For example, it *could* be a sticky starter or intermittent brushes and beating on it can get it going, at least for that time. Only thing apparent it that it's intermittent.

Unless you want to guess and start replacing parts and hope to get lucky eventually, you'd need to do some testing.

1. Verify PATS is not unhappy as that will inhibit the starter.
2. Do a visual check of the wiring connections at the starter. They're subject to the elements and are a common failure point.
3. After that, it does get a bit more complicated. You'd need to use either a multi-meter or test light to check various points in the circuit and "catch it in the act" for more info.

I have tried to visual check all the starter wiring and swapped the relay. Will see what happens. Sometimes it goes for months without messing up. That's what sucks. No codes or anything that shows up.Thanks for the responses.
I would think the push button would need to tap into the relay to trigger it?

Something else to try is your other key. I've never had a problem with OEM keys, but I have seen the truck not always pick up the signal from an aftermarket key and start only randomly. It's an easy check and fix!
