I just cleaned, my shift motor on my 92 explorer, it was real dirty i used electrical contact cleaner a Q tips it was about 90% better the remaining 10% did not want to come off, i hooked it all back up but it all back together, re hooked the battery it clicked for about 5 sec then stopped and i hit it again clicked 1 sec stop, what else could be the problem. I did not open the part were the wires go, someone please helP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i read the thing by dr bob and i think am going to try emery cloth to get the rest of the dirt off, and should i open the part were all the wires enter??is there anything to clean there, what size torx head does it take anyone know?
I too have 4 by isssues with a 91 Exploder. What was yours doing to make you take the T-case shift motor off? I am not even getting any lights up in the dash on the slector. No 4WD high or low. Just wondering what you found....as for the Torx, if you dont have a good set, get one! would suggest it very much. Dont cost lots at NAPA or whatever.
BTW---i believe its a Tamper Torx 20. Tamper T20??? That i think is your size.

Last winter my 4x4 was being tempromental i would have to push the button several times before it would engage, but it worked for every snow storm we had, then this summer i went to test it and i just got a click, i did not get a light or anything just one click and that was it, first i looked through the posts here, and found one who had the same problem he gave his own directions still not clear enough to do it, i put up a post and they gave me this web site that tells you how to rebuild the motor and clean the motor i just cleaned mine, but i have to do it again with emery cloth seeing the crc electrical cleaner did not get all the dirt off for it to work, the site is http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/tcase.html, oh and there is the computer in the left panel were the jack is, pull the 2 connecters out of the side closet to the wiper fluid, then turn the key to on do not start the car go back there and push the white button on the bottom of the computer, if the light stays on its the computer or the push buton if it blinks its the motor and should just need a cleaning, look at the site i gave you. its real ez to do after you free the rusted on bolts on the balenceer, the motor bolts are real ez, the brushs might give you trouble i used duckt tape to hold them back until i got the armature in place then i took it off and they went right into place,i'll give another site that give step by step pics and even know this site is for a ranger the motor is pretty much the same and looks the same opend up this will give you a better idea, but also read the first one https://www.ford-trucks.com/TCaseshiftmotor.htm
i would use fine sand paper or emery cloth to clean the contacts the crc does not work good, thats what am going to do tommarow when i re take it apart and clean it again hopefully when i get the rest of the build up off it will work,
Took it back apart today cleaned it using emery cloth and all works great 4x4 high and 4x4 low.....it just take 3 push's for it to light up 4x4 but if you do it when your driving you can hear and feel its in 4x4 but not light hit it again off hit it again and the light goes on..........THANKS ALL
Well...i have to say that i am glad i looked here first! Worked like a champ! I got 4wd again! Here is my helpful trick. I removed the shaft with the coil and had a hard time cleaning the contact ring. SOOO what i did is put the shaft in our shops drill press and turned it on. Then i just ran fine grit paper on it and it turned copper again in less then 5 seconds! worked great. Thanks to all.
