I hate doing this I can't accurately describe the sound but know it's not good. '94 XLT, 104K, 4x4.
The noise seems to be coming from the front driver side, low. Sterted as a sound akin to a playing card in bike spokes and was faint, going away over 2000 rpm. Hit the gas from a stoplight and noise got definitely louder and is there all of the time.
I wish I could help more with describing it, but it's kind of hard. If anyone has any idea what it could be, exhaust, hopefully not the engine, etc, any help would be appreciated.
Have you checked to see if the fan or serpentine belt are hitting anything? Does the sound vary with the RPMS, and does it do it in neutral and when driving?
"playing car in spokes" is often the way failing auto hubs are described. If you put it in 4WD, can you get power to the front wheels? Are the axles disengaging from the wheels?
Thanx guys for responding.
I doubt sound is 4wd, as the motor for the 4wd need servicing, and ive read the links here and elsewhere on how to do so, but I need a day free from classes to try and fix it.
As for the noise it occurs while in neutral, while driving, while idling. The noise definitely gets louder as you accelerate. I've had mufflers come loose from other vehicles, but this is much farther front. All guages read normal and have since it occurred. I dont notice it driving differently at all, except the noise.
Well, found the culprit myself, but I don't know the technical name for it.
A friend saysy it's a "smog tube" that runs form the exhaust headers to the intake manifold. I guess it was just cast iron or something because it rusted through and became detached where it hooks up to the headers.
Anyone know the name for this part other than "smog tube"?
I think that's the egr tube. Goes from the exhaust pipe up to the EGR valve? A buddy of mine with a ranger replaced that with an adjustable wrench in about 10 minutes. If I remember correctly, it was about a $30 part.
Heh, well it was the EGR tube, but $30 and a wrench wouldn't do it. For me it was $60 dealer only part, and 2 hrs of labor because the bolts were rusted and "frozen".
My rhetorical question: Ford claims that this part doesn't wear out often, thus there's low demand and no stores but Ford carry it. Why then is that the only part on the whole EGR system that even shows signs of rust?
