Hey everyone, I'm new here and first want to thanks for allowing me to join!
My son and I are currently working on his 1976 F150 Explorer. While changing out the vent window seals, I noticed the handles were pretty loose. I haven't taken them off yet. Doing some research, it seems the handles themselves will wear out and become loose. So, I'm looking at replacing them. With that being said, I was wondering if I can replace them with the locking style handles from later years? Are they compatible? Any advice or help is much appreciated! Thanks again everyone!
Is the flip down part loose on the mount shaft or is the hard plastic tip missing? The tips become worn or breaks off. The tip is held in place by a piece of plastic that goes INSIDE the curved end and some glue. To get the complete handle off the shaft you have to drive out a roll pin. It is SMALL and can be a PITA, but it can be done. Do it wrong and you break the mount shaft off or bend the piece it mounts to.
Bad news is AFAIK NO you can not change from none locking handle to locking handle because the mount shaft is different between the 2 styles. I had that same issue on my 79 with NONE locking handles. I tried to add locking on a none locking style shaft.
@77&79F250 Thank you sir! The handle is loose, but I haven't had a chance to try and take it off yet. But thanks again for the reply, you answered my questions and then some! I know LMC doesnt have them in stock, but I'll try Dennis Carpenter. Thanks Again!
I use DC 100% of the time, unless it is a long backordered item and I need it now. I posted the LMC stuff because that was the fasted to pull up. But I actually/usually just go hit up my parts truck line up when I need parts. Again getting the roll pin out can be a challenge but can be done.
Well its definitely nice to have a few options haha. So, I have another question. The current steering column doesn't tilt, so I'm looking at replacing it with one that does. Is that a year specific part? There's a few local junk yards with later model broncos and stuff. just wasnt sure if they would bolt up or not.
Best bet for a bolt in, plug in and go is to get a late year made 2wd or 4wd (what ever your application) 77, 78, 79. A 1980's and up has the key in the steering column. Good luck finding an OEM one of those that is in good to great shape for less than $200 or $300. Most need t/s switch, bearings and maybe even a little more work. And the little piece that locks and unlocks the tilt mechanism (that gets a worn out from folks using the steering wheel as a climb in the cab handle) is NOT reproduced. Most are worn out and have way to much play to be worth it. Just rebuild yours and get on down the road without a tilt unless your body shape demands it and there is not way around (belly) it. Lol Or get a $$ IDIDIT https://www.ididitinc.com/ $$$$$$$$$$$$ https://www.ididit.com/c-1310145-ret...umn-shift.html
Haha! Unfortunately, my son is a big boy. (Large frame,no belly...). There's a smaller steering wheel on it now and it just barely misses his thighs when he turns. I'll start keeping my eye out. Thanks again!
You might have to mod the current seat or easier to put a REAR SEAT out of a 2000 or 2001 Super Duty Crew Cab in it. It bolts right in using the 79 sliders and with the seat design it will be lower. I ended up having to make some riser brackets for mine. And I am 6" 200. Best 20 dollar Craigslist seat I ever got.
Any seat from a reg cab up to a 96 will bolt in using the 73-79 sliders. As far as using a Super Duty Crew Cab REAR seat in a reg cab I know mine was a 2000 or 2001. This is from a 1994.
2000 SD CC rear
2005 in a super cab
2001 in a SC
2016 Fusion in a SC.
2001 Power Stroke
01 SD again in a SC
Those 2016 Fusion seats took some rework.
