Hello ,I have a 2009 superduty 5.4. I've replaced fuel pump driver, fuel pump, fuel filter, all 4 o2 sensors, exhaust manifold, plugs(Motorcraft),coils, injectors, maf, tps, timing chains, cam phasers, guides, tensioners, cam position sensors, vct solenoids, oil pump, water pump, fuel rail pressure sensor, still having issues with this damn thing! Hesitates on acceleration ,****ty mileage, no power, codes I have that keep coming back are 0172,2196,2198. I like the truck but this issue is getting out of hand! Help!
Does this just get worse and worse? My son had a car years ago that the cat was going bad, it got so bad it would not run over 30 mph. He left it in a town east of here, I had to get a ride to get the car, limped it home and then ran a rod up the exhaust pipe, moved it back and forth, and the cat interior just all blew out the exhaust. Car ran fine then.
I've never had a clogged cat in my life, but apparently there seems to be a lot of people on here who have experienced it, so maybe it could be the case. Generally with cat failure it means there is something upstream causing fouling, in your case the extremely rich condition of unburnt fuel or coolant could have fouled it.
If it were me, I'd get Forscan or any code reader that does some live data and check the MAF reading making sure it is within spec when key is on, engine is off, at Idle and 2000 RPM. Check to verify that the pre & post O2 sensors are functioning. Check fuel pressure (could be too high?). When you pull a spark plug, does it smell obviously like fuel? Do they have black coloration? I assume you've reset the PCM since doing all this work? Did you notice any coolant in any of the cylinders?
You can then try to measure temperature using an infrared gun (cheap) and verify that the temperature of exhaust pipe is cooler at the inlet side than the exhaust side of the cat.
