Original owner of my early 2004 F-250 PSD with 258K on it. I am getting ready to replace for the 3rd or 4th time, the water temp sensor that is located by upper rad hose/ thermostat location. When it goes out, I can no longer see my temp variant with oil temp on my scan gauge to keep an eye on the dreaded oil cooler. Is this a common issue with the 6.0 or is it just my bad luck. I keep the truck OEM, this part will be warranty as it is a Motorcraft and is only 18 months old, thus with in Motorcraft 2 year warranty, but is any one aware of maybe a better after market one?
No other issues, oil temp reads fine, I'm not sure that sensor monitors oil temp, I think only water temp. There are a few you tube videos on how to replace and they only address water temp with this part, on my dash, the water temp needle never leaves the "cold" area, and Scan Gauge shows correct oil temp but in- correct water temp. I had it installed at an independent diesel repair shop but they get the part from local Ford dealer parts dept. thus I feel it should be a warranty item as less then 2 yrs old. Will see. I wouldn't think this is a "big" after market part so will probably just have to deal with crap motorcraft part again. I have no plans on getting rid of the old girl, despite the cost of diesel, still a lot of life left in her.

Hi. I think Bismic meant that the sensors are interchangeable- not that they measure both fluids temps. The oil and coolant temp. sensors are the same part. So you could flip the coolant sensor and the oil sensor position and see if you have a sensor issue or possibly a wiring issue.
I just don't see the evidence of it being a poorly made sensor (ie low failure rate in general). Maybe there is an intermittent issue in the wiring harness - worth investigating anyway. Also, the "Indy" shop may not have actually installed an OEM sensor. Lots of Independent shops say they do, but don't.
The dash temperature gauge is virtually useless. If it does come off of the "mid-line" indication, then it isn't far from being too hot.
For the Scangauge reading, I would program in the coolant temperature instead of using the "standard" *fwT PID (if you are currently using it). In the past, some people didn't have the programming correct.
I will try that with the scan gauge, I remember when I first installed it years ago, I called them about water temp and they did say it was already programmed in. I'll try the numbers you posted and see if it will work, again, my gauge is probably 10-12 years old now and may not be able to up date it as the version installed may not allow.
