Another wiper problem 1996 Ranger
I found a thread where a guy took his multi-switch apart and cleaned it up and out real good and his wipers started working.
I did the same thing; took the cap off end of switch, cleaned all old hard grease off spring and other components and re-greased with dielectric grease and they WORKED! For a while, several days later nothing.
Wipers run if the relay spots are jumped out, both hi/low.
I figured that meant the switch was bad so replaced the multi-switch today and nothing. The GEM remains a question to me but:
1. It appears to be unavailable
2. Over $200. if I can find it. (based on a price for an Explorer.
I must have missed a step or misunderstood the threads I was reading, I understood that if jumpers worked it was NOT the GEM? if the wipers worked jumped out, it can't be the motor?
That only left the switch. What am I not understanding or trying yet?
Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.
I replaced key switch/tumbler and now will have two (2) keys for truck, one to start, one for doors. Did not fix problem. There was also a “Morse Code” beeping sound instead of the door ajar/lights left on alarm.
it is still doing that tonight. I realized tonight that when you open the glove box, there is the courtesy light and it works normally, but if you leave glove box door open and turn the key on, the glove box light flashes in time with the Morse code sound which after removing the factory radio, it appears to be coming from the black box. Partial stickers seems
to say wiper module.
Only problem radio has is the on/off button sticks most time and I just turn it down. All station buttons work, Volume-AM/FM, clock.
I took the old multi switch apart again to clean any dielectric grease that may cause a problem and reinstalled. Bell/chime worked perfectly and so did wipers. I ran short of time to reassemble rest of dash including radio and drove car to work this morning.
This afternoon I reinstalled the dash covers and installed the radio and turned key to hear the Morse Code sounds again. NO WIPERS AGAIN!!!
I took steering column covers off and installed the multi switch from the ‘99 Mountaineer donor I have and no change, module still sending out a Morse code type signal.
The module in the Mountaineer has about 20-30 more wires and twice the length of connector for that module. I have looked for frayed wires, but am played out.
I guess at this point there are only two things to do, run continuity on every wire coming out of module and/or look for similar Ranger in the salvage yard.
